Business: Watching what’s next for former Mathis site, American Legion. Mall loses MasterCuts, undergoing $100,000 ‘interior remodel.’

A look at the former home of Mathis Builders Hardware & Supply from the parking lot of Moe’s off Shorter Avenue looking across Carter Street. Hometown photo.

Clear and free to develop: The longtime home of Mathis Builders Hardware & Supply at 22 Shorter Ave. is just about pad ready for the next venture. And that might be closer than most realize as we did spot a builder’s sign on property on Wednesday. We’re not sure if that was for the demolition work or what’s next — but hope to find out later today.

Mathis in December moved to its new quarters at 145 John Davenport Drive, less than a mile from the original location. It was the latest in a series of moves in the Shorter neighborhood near Midtown Cross as Mathis True Value was built just behind the former hardware store and has since been joined off and Carter Avenued by Dos Bros. Fresh Mexican Grill restaurant.

Don’t forget what’s possible just across Shorter Avenue near the Rome-Floyd County Parks and Recreation office. The American Legion property at 5 Shorter Ave. is set to close this month ona ale to Parke Day Properties and the Romo Group LLC. The buyers already have three tenants in hand. An online marketing brochure for the site already is online (image above).

Changes at Mount Berry Mall: Gone is MasterCuts, a full-service hair salon, and a mainstay at the retail center. The business closed earlier this month with some of its employees taking to social media to announce where they landed. Other news from the mall: A $100,000 permit has been issued for what’s identified as “interior remodel, dropped ceiling, flooring and soffits “
