Isakson’s farewell address in the Senate. He stresses the need for bipartisanship, ‘to find common ground’ and solve problems.

U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., delivered his farewell address on the floor of the U.S. Senate on Tuesday.

Georgia’s senior U.S. senator kept mostly to one topic during his final major address to colleagues – and the country. He repeatedly stressed the need for bipartisanship and for getting things done. Isakson said party, race or other barriers shouldn’t be factors when doing the right thing. He joked about those who didn’t vote for him in a certain race, calling them “future friends” because he hoped to earn their votes in future races.

You can watch his speech in the above YouTube feed. Below, please some tributes to Isakson:

From Gov. Brian Kemp:

“No one embodies Georgia’s heart and soul more than Johnny Isakson. As we saw on the floor of the Senate today, Isakson is the standard for what it means to be a statesman, gentleman, and servant leader. He is held in the highest regard by all who are fortunate enough to know him and work with him. Georgians owe Johnny a tremendous debt of gratitude for decades of selfless service in the Georgia General Assembly, State Board of Education, U.S. House and U.S. Senate. Marty, the girls, and I are forever grateful for his kindness and friendship over the years, and we are praying for him and Dianne as they begin their next journey.”

From U.S. Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga.:

  • Bittersweet Occasion: “Today is truly a bittersweet occasion. It’s bitter because my friend, my mentor, and partner in the United States Senate, Johnny Isakson, is stepping down at the end of this month. For those of us who know this man, this is tough to come to grips with. I’ll dearly miss him on many levels. I’ll miss having him here in the United States Senate alongside me. I’ll miss his words of wisdom. I’ll miss his patience. Most of all, I think I’ll miss his example.”
  • Partner In The Senate: “Johnny has meant the world to me, and for longer than I’ve been in the United States Senate. When I got involved in the political process, I had never been elected to anything. This was a radically different experience than I personally had ever had. Johnny helped me with that transition. He gave me advice, he befriended me, he introduced me to colleagues here in the Senate. He’s been the best partner anyone could ever ask for.”
  • Working Together: “A lot of people in this town know how to talk. Johnny has shown us how important it is to listen and learn from each other. He showed us how to work together on behalf of not just ourselves or our next reelection but truly for the people who put us here.”
  • Greatest among us: “In the Bible in Matthew 23, it says that the greatest among you will be the servant. Today, I want to remind everybody in this body that the greatest among us is Johnny Isakson. Johnny, it’s been a true blessing. God bless you and Dianne and your family. America will always be in your debt. Thank you for everything.”
