Sam Edwards was on camera with Fox 5’s Paul Milliken at 8:35 a.m. or so as Sam explained the original of the veterans’ photos lining his walls. It was a great story and we’ll post the video as soon as it is available from Fox 5. Milliken is staying on site to test Samburgers as well so stay turned to Fox 5’s Good Day Atlanta for an additional segment … live from Armuchee.
There is no other spot in Northwest Georgia that pays tribute to veterans the way Sam Edwards does each day. The walls of his restaurant are filled with photos of 3,000 veterans who have stopped by to dine with him. On our last visit, we actually saw the conversation develop where Sam learned a guest was a veteran and promptly took a photograph to included on the tribute wall.
“I don’t mess around with it. I want them to know how special they are,” says Edwards, who served in the Army Security Agency during Vietnam.
One of the veterans or another guest apparently tipped the Atlanta television station to Edwards’ unique restaurant, known for the expanding salute to veterans but also for his love of anything that flies. A producer called him last week to arrange the visit — but hadn’t heard about the veterans’ salute inside the restaurant.
Good Day Atlanta will be on site from around 7:15 until 10 a.m. or so on Monday. Just look for the Fox 5 van in front of the spot with a VW bus up in the air and a jet’s nose hanging over the entrance (with another jet just to its north). Sam’s Burger-Deli has become a must-see visit because of the tribute to veterans, his love of aircraft and his famous burger (you need to try the Philly Cheesesteak — or Samburger Philly — as well at 3268 Martha Berry Highway).
