There are disturbing new details about the case against a former Rome surgeon facing rape and three other felony counts in Athens-Clarke County.
According to the Athens Banner-Herald:
Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Zachary F. Solomon “is accused of raping a woman in Athens during a violent assault in which the woman’s eardrum was ruptured, according to Athens-Clarke police. The assault is alleged to have occurred between 1-3 a.m. Oct. 13 in an apartment on Athens’ west side, according to police.
Zachary Forrest Solomon, 34, of Rome is charged with rape, aggravated sodomy, aggravated assault by strangulation, aggravated battery and battery. He was arrested Oct. 16, denied bond the next day and remains in the Clarke County Jail.
Warrants allege that Solomon strangled the 27-year-old victim to the point she could not breathe and hit her on the side of the head so hard that it caused her eardrum to rupture. He is also alleged to have hit her head and face with open hands and closed fists.
Police said Monday this was “not a stranger on stranger” crime but would not say how Solomon knew the woman. Expanded report.

Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Zachary F. Solomon, who until recently practiced with the Harbin Clinic in Rome, is now jailed in the Athens-Clarke County jail after his arrest on Wednesday for a number of felony charges including rape and aggravated assault.
According to Athens-Clarke County jail records, Solomon, of 24 Pear St. in Rome, is being held without bond. In addition to the rape and aggravated assault charge, he is also charged with aggravated battery, aggravated sodomy and battery (misdemeanor). He was arrested by the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office. No other details are available on the case.
Harbin Clinic released this official statement on Saturday: “Harbin Clinic is aware of Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Zachary Solomon’s arrest. Dr. Solomon has tendered his resignation and is no longer affiliated with Harbin Clinic. Solomon also has a previous arrest in Floyd County. According to Floyd County Jail records, Solomon was arrested on June 21, 2019 after a court order. There are no additional details on those charges.
Solomon had joined the Harbin Clinic in February 2019. Solomon received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He completed his residency in general surgery at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, GA and his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Georgia.
