Rockmart Police: Body of unidentified man found in creek; sent for autopsy at GBI Crime Lab for cause of death as investigation continues.

Rockmart Police are investigating the death of an unidentified male whose body was found in a shallow creek behind the SunTrust Bank off Elm Street around 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Assistant Chief Jonathan Fuller says a nearby resident called E-911 after smelling a foul odor. Police began a search of the area and located the body.

“We can confirm that it was a male with tattoos, but we not yet know a race. The coroner estimates the body has been in the water 7 to 10 days as it was partially decomposed. We do not yet have an indentification or a cause of death. The body has been sent to the GBI Crime Lab. At this time, we have no reason to think it was foul play,” says Fuller.

Polk County Coronor Tony Brazier says the body was transported this evening to the crime lab. He estimates a full autospy will be completed Sunday or Monday. “We are in the beginning stages of the investigation, but we are looking at it aggressively until we can rule out foul play,” he says.
