Ms. Barbara Jean Walden, age 78, of Rome, GA passed away at her residence on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019. Barbara was born on August 21, 1941, daughter of the late James Cooley and the late Marguerite Roberts. She was a member of the Transfiguration Episcopal Church and was retired from Georgia Highlands College.

Following her retirement, she became a world traveler and enjoyed visiting places like Greece, Spain, Italy, Germany and France. Her passions were painting and making stained glass with her son. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Barbara was preceded in death by a son, Dereck Walden.

She is survived by her son, Crawford Walden Jr. and his wife Marsha; one grandson, Hunter Walden; three sisters: Mary (Frank) Smith, JR (Jim) Fincher, and Bebee Powers and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2019, with a reception following at Transfiguration Episcopal Church with The Rev. Linda Baker Pineo officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The American Heart Association or The Transfiguration Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Dorothy W. Ward, age 91, of Cave Spring, went to her Heavenly home on Thursday, September 12, 2019.

Mrs. Ward was born in Telfair County, Georgia on January 2, 1928, daughter of the late Jacob and Emma Clements. She resided in Savannah for more than 50 years, moving to the Rome area in 2002.

She has been a faithful member of the Hollywood Baptist Church and was proud to be the oldest member. She was dear to many and was affectionally known as Miss Dot or Mama Dot. Her grandson summed up her sweet gentle spirit by saying “she was the most comfortable person to be around of any that I have ever known.” We as a family are blessed to have had the gift of her presence in our lives for so many years; our name for her was “Wonderful”, but she was also known as “My” Mother, Grandma, Maw Maw and Granny.  She was a loving woman and a much-loved woman, blessed by many and a blessing to many.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Payton Henry Ward Jr., a loving son-in-law, Rholan Evans Clifton, a grand son-in-law, Mark Bonner, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.

Survivors include her daughter, Carole Clifton, Cave Spring; 2 grandchildren. Bill Clifton and Stacey Bonner; her cherished great-granddaughter, Anna Bonner; several nieces and nephews, as well as her fur baby and constant companion, “Ebbie”

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, September 14, 2019, in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel.  The Rev. David Harper will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Saturday from 11am until time for the service.

There will be a memorial service will be held in Savannah at a later date, for her family and friends in the Savannah area.


William Donald Traylor passed away in his home Wednesday September 11, 2019 after an extended illness.

Mr. Traylor was raised in the Riverside Community and lifelong resident of Rome, GA, was the son of the late James Leonard Traylor Sr and the late Ada Parris Traylor. His brothers were the late James Leonard Traylor Jr. (Frankie) and Kenneth Harold Traylor (Jean). He is preceded in death by his wife Peggy Russell Traylor and his son William Donald Traylor Jr.

Mr. Traylor is survived by his wife, Charlotte Rudd Baker Traylor and daughters, Donna Traylor Sitterding (Ron) and Dawn Traylor Henderson (Gordon). His grandchildren are Zach Sitterding (Veronica), Charley Walker, Chris Sitterding(Katherine), Jason Brownlow (Tammy), and Kimbrell Hughes (John). Great grandchildren are Cayden, Coen, and Carmen Sitterding, Ally, Bruce, and Coryn Brownlow, and Wyatt Hughes. His stepsons are David Baker (Karen), Richard Baker (Melanie) and Timothy Baker (Gina). His step grandchildren are John, Lacey, and Andrew Baker, Rachel Baker, and Brittany Mauser. His great grandchild Dallas Ivey. He also had numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Traylor was employed by General Electric Company for 41 years where he worked as an inspector overseeing transformer construction. He also co-owned and managed Pizza Roma Restaurant with his brother for 12 years. He was a lifelong attendee of Riverside Baptist Church, where he was an active member in the Ready Sunday School Class and sang in the choir. Donald also served as a former deacon and RA Teacher. He loved hunting; fly fishing, and growing tomatoes in his garden. His favorite past time was attending University of Alabama football games or watching the games on TV. He never missed a game and claimed to be Bama’s biggest fan.

Mr. Traylor was a graduate of Rome High School where he was a running back from 1951-1953, scoring 24 touchdowns during his high school career. He also played basketball and baseball, playing the positions shortstop and third base. He received 15 scholarship offers to attend colleges all over the south but chose to attend the University of Alabama where he played football during the 1953 and 1954 seasons until a knee injury ended his football career. His accomplishments include All American, All Region and All State in both football and baseball. Mr. Traylor was inducted into the Rome-Floyd Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. He also coached numerous mite and midget football teams and helped coach church team sports throughout the years, influencing the lives of many young boys.

He will be gratly missed by his family and friends. ROLL TIDE!

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. on Saturday September 14, 2019 at Riverside Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Lambert and Rev. Bob Skelton officiating. Interment will follow in East View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 P.M. until service hour on Saturday at Riverside Baptist Church, 48 Ash Street Rome GA. 30161.

Pallbearers include the following gentlemen: Zach Sitterding, Charley Walker, Chris Sitterding, Jason Brownlow, Cayden Sitterding, Coen Sitterding, Bryce Brownlow, John Baker, and Andrew Baker.

Ms. Averia Bynum, age 49, of Cedar Bluff, Alabama transitioned September 11, 2019. Service for Ms. Averia Bynum will be Saturday, September 14, 2019 at New Hope UMC in Cedar Bluff, Al. at 12 noon (CST). Ms. Bynum will lie in repose from 11 am (CST) until the funeral hour. Interment will for the service at Weiss Lake Memorial Gardens ( 3594 Hwy 68 Gayleville, Al.).

Ms. Bynum is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She is survived by her son, Jerel Mathias Johnson; father, Harvey Joe Bynum; mother, Piacenti Jenell Bynum; brother, Joseph (Camille) Bynum; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Sharon Mease Murdock, age 68, of Centre, Alabama, passed away on, Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at her residence.

Sharon was born in Asheville, North Carolina, on July 28th 1951, the oldest daughter of, Patty Jennings Mease and the late Vaughn George Mease Sr. Sharon graduated class of 1969 from Enka High School, then from Genevieve’s Secretarial College in 1970. Sharon was a Godly woman who never met a stranger and you could always find her outside working with her flowers or simply enjoying nature. She loved the Lord and her family with all her heart.

Sharon is survived by her husband of 46 years, Jack Edward Murdock of Centre, AL, daughter Cason Murdock Beck and her husband Chris Beck of Cedar Bluff, AL, her stepson Shayne R. Murdock and his wife Kimberly Murdock of Tallapoosa, GA, her stepdaughter Candy Murdock Holland and her husband Billy of Roanoke, AL., her mother, Patty Jennings Mease of Candler,NC, her sister Dawn Mease Blankenship and her husband James Blankenship of Statham, GA, and her brother Vaughn George Mease Jr of Shelby, NC. Her grandchildren, Brody Beck, Barrett Beck, Bristol Beck, Jordan Murdock Kierbrow, Kayla Williams, Kamryn Cox, Darby Murdock, Stevie Murdock, Jaxson Murdock, Autumn Holland, and Kristen Holland and Billy Holland Jr. Her niece Wendy Setzer and her husband John Setzer, Tiffany Smith and her husband Kirk Smith. Her nephew Vaughn George Mease III and his wife Kelsie. Her great nieces, Riley Setzer, Lyla Setzer, Ellie Smith, and Georgia Smith. Along with several great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 14, from 6:00-8:00 PM EST at Salmon Funeral Home, 2516 New Calhoun Hwy, NE, Rome, GA, 30161. Funeral Services will be held at White Rock Baptist Church in Candler, NC. On, Monday, September 16, 2019. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 12:00 PM. Internment will follow after the service in the church cemetery.
