Business: Chick-fil-A Distribution Center under way in Bartow County; already a few people hired with 300 jobs due overall.

Since breaking ground this past June, the new Chick-fil-A Distribution Center is rising quickly off Cass-White Road in Cartersville. This is the chain’s first company-owned distribution center with a targeted opening in 2020.

“Construction is going well for the project and we are still on schedule to open in summer 2020,” says Matt Rumsey, general manager of the Cartersville Distribution Center.

It is based on 50 acres and will be approximately 200,000 square feet upon completion.

“We are excited to announce that this project will create up to 300 new jobs for a variety of areas, including drivers, warehouse team members, leadership team members, and administrative staff,” says Rumsey. “Hiring has begun and we continue to seek out individuals who have a passion for innovation and customer service.” (see below)

This past spring, the company opened a pilot facility in a spec building across the street from the construction site. This temporary location is serving as “a learning lab” while the full-scale permanent facility is being built.

“Our hope is that the new distribution center will reduce some of the daily supply complexities that our restaurants face in addition to having a positive economic impact on Bartow County,” says Rumsey.

Once the new distribution center is complete next summer, it will support some 300 restaurants across the Southeast. Rumsey says the list of exactly which locations is still being finalized. But given Cartersville’s location, the center likely will support locations in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama or South Carolina.

Chick-fil-A officials will not release specifics on the total cost of the project. Melinda Lemmon, executive director of Cartersville-Bartow County Department of Economic Development, says the Development Authority of Bartow County has approved an inducement resolution to offer up to $60 million in bond-related support should the company ask for it. But they have not asked for any support at this time.

“While we can’t share the specifics around the monetary commitment for the project, we are thrilled that the new distribution center will allow us continue to innovate around Chick-fil-A restaurants’ unique needs so that we can better serve restaurant Operators and Team Members, and ultimately our guests,” says Rumsey.

Lemmon says her department has nominated the project for the “Deal of the Year” Award given by the Georgia Economic Development Association. Communities can nominate development projects based on their population size. Bartow’s nomination is in the 100,000-plus population category.

As for plans for more Chick-fil-A Distribution Centers in the future, Rumsey says there are no official announcements to share at this time but there are plans for pilot facilities. “We are excited to learn from the pilot facilities as we explore what the future may entail for our distribution network,” he says.

Job Responsibilities and Activities

As the warehouse supervisor, you will be responsible for motivating, staffing, scheduling and troubleshooting a team responsible for receiving, loading, staging and completing other warehouse tasks. In addition, you will ensure compliance with all federal, state and local laws and regulations regarding safety and food safety. In this role, you also will:

  • Recommend potential operational improvements to the warehouse manager
  • Closely collaborate with DC leaders to identify and resolve operational bottlenecks
  • Carefully monitor expenditure data and support budget management
  • Instill a culture of safety, engagement and positivity that reflects Chick-fil-A values and honors the role of Operators
  • Publish KPIs for the warehouse and drive improvement as needed
  • Balance the needs of the Operator with the capabilities of the operation
  • Collaborate with the warehouse manager regarding staff performance; identify and drive areas of improvement; and recognize team members’ outstanding performance
  • Support warehouse staff as needed
