Code Orange smog alert Thursday:
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division has issued a Code Orange (Unhealthy for sensitive groups) Air Quality Alert for Atlanta for Thursday, which includes Bartow County. Under Code Orange conditions, the outdoor air quality is likely to be unhealthy for some people. Children, people who are sensitive to ozone, and people with heart or lung disease should limit prolonged outdoor exertion during the late afternoon or early evening when ozone concentrations are highest.
Our torrid Tuesday:
- We missed tying the record high by one degree in Rome. The official high for Tuesday was 99 degrees. The heat index peaked at 109 degrees.
- In Cartersville: 100 degrees was the high mark, tying the record first set on Aug. 13, 1957. Maximum heat index of 109 (for three out of five hours).
- Late-night storms: Gusts of 35 mph and about a quarter inch of rain were recorded at the airport in Rome late Tuesday.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected each day, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. A few storms could be strong with gusty winds, heavy rain and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning.
