Perdue due at GOP Tillman Hangar Rally on Saturday: David Perdue’s bid for a second term in the U.S. Senate will be the focal point of the 2020 election cycle. The state’s junior senator, elected in 2014, is scheduled to be the first speaker at the Floyd County Republican Party’s annual Tillman Hangar Rally beginning at 11 a.m. at Richard B. Russell Airport/Towers Field. Perdue is perhaps the state’s leading booster for the Trump Administration; we expect his campaign to synergize with the president’s bid for a second term as well.
- The 2020 Senate race: So far, former Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson, a Democrat, is declared to be in the race. Also running: Ted Terry, former mayor of Clarkston. No Republican opposition at this time. Republican, Democratic primaries: May 19.
- About Saturday’s rally: Set for 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., the event is billed as “the largest annual Republican rally in North Georgia.” It will feature speakers from local, state and federal officials. The Trump Bus is scheduled to stop by as well. What to watch for: Clues about who is and isn’t running in 2020, including incumbents and challengers; we’re hearing a surprise or two already. The schedule: Doors open at 10 a.m. with a catered barbecue lunch available for purchase starting at 10:30 a.m. The event begins at 11.
