A Rome High and Berry College graduate who’s family has strong ties to the community was killed in an Independence Day week boating collision in Northeast Georgia. Killed was Brandon Dean “B-Dub” Wilson, 39, of Grayson. His 6-year-old son, Garrett, was rescued. Family and friends have started on online donations page to benefit his wife and two sons.
The following is a release from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources detailing the accident; the release is courtesy of AccessWDUN:
“Georgia DNR game wardens responded to a boating incident that occurred on Lake Hartwell in the area of Eastanollee Creek just after 10 p.m. on Saturday,” said Mark McKinnon of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division. “It appears that a small johnboat being operated by an adult male with his 6-year-old son on board was struck by a ski boat. The child had on a life jacket and was uninjured in the incident. He was pulled from the water by a passenger in the ski boat.”
McKinnon confirmed Wilson, operator of the johnboat, was later located in the water deceased and was turned over to the Stephens County Coroner’s Office. “The investigation will likely take six to eight weeks to complete,” McKinnon said.
Family and friends have started an online donations page, where the total has reached $72,000 as of Friday evening. Click here. Another account, also for the boys’ college fund, is at Wells Fargo Savings Account, Brandon Wilson Benefit Memorial Fund, Account Number 1059289833.
Funeral services are set for Saturday. Please see his obituary below:
Brandon Dean Wilson, age 39, of Grayson, Georgia, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019. Brandon was born in Gainesville, Fla., on Jan. 16, 1980. He attended Rome High School, Reinhardt College and graduated from Berry College in 2003. He was employed by Waffle House Inc. in the Construction Services Department.
Brandon is survived by his wife, Jenny Wilson and two sons, Pierce and Garrett, his parents Dean and Debra Wilson, his brother Dustin Wilson (Krista), his sister Rebecca Wilson Fussell (John), his grandparents Pete and Delores Kelly, his grandfather Regis Cassidy, along with nieces (Payton Wilson and Cameron Fussell), nephews (Knox Wilson and Andrew Fussell) and extended family.
Brandon was everyone’s best friend. He was the first to tell you a better way to do something. He loved finding new music (and making everyone listen to it). He brought stories and entertainment to every encounter – and was ridiculously long winded. He loved coaching and learning and helping kids get better. He loved fishing, frog gigging, bourbon and busting out the slip and slide. But more than anything, Brandon loved his family. He was their biggest supporter and their best friend.
In lieu in of flowers please consider a donation to one of the following to assist with Pierce and Garrett’s college fund.
Services are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic Church in Lawrenceville. The family will receive friends from noon until 4 p.m.
