Rome woman, 85, dies from injuries sustained in Sunday afternoon accident.

A Rome woman has died from injuries sustained in an accident Sunday afternoon. Betty Jo Battles, 85, died Tuesday at an area hospital.

Preliminary reports from Rome Police show the accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of North Broad and Callahan Avenue. The initial investigation shows Mrs. Battles was at fault, having run a red light, police say. The city’s selective enforcement unit is taking a closer look at the accident.

Calling hours are scheduled for 6 until 8 tonight for Mrs. Battles, according to her obituary provided by Good Shepherd Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.Friday at West Rome Church of God of the Union Assembly, 2827 Alabama Highway, Rome, Rome, with Rev. Lamont Kiser, Rev. Gene Marie and Rev. James Adams officiating.

“Our hearts are sad today. A dear sister made her heavenly flight earlier this morning. Sister Betty Battles was dear to all, who loved all and was loved by all. Please keep her family and our church family in your thoughts and prayers. You will surely be missed. We love you Betty Jo!! Until we meet again.”

Mrs. Betty Jo Coker Battles, age 85 of Rome passed away July 9, 2019, in a local hospital following injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Mrs. Battles was born June 27, 1934, in Dalton, Ga. a daughter of the late, Morgan Coker, and Bonnie Cowart Coker. She was member of West Rome Church of God of the Union Assembly. Mrs. Battles was employed for several years at Celanese Fibers, and later retiring from Hostess Bakery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald R. Battles, brothers, Warren Coker, Bruce Coker, and a sister, Doris Lovine.

Survivors include her son, Mike Battles, Rome; grandchildren, Adrea (Charles) Battles de Young, Rome; Jeff (Kathryn) Battles, Falkville, Al; great grandchildren, Kirstein de Young, a niece, Carla Adams, several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday July 12, 2019 at West Rome Church of God of the Union Assembly, 2827 Alabama Hwy, Rome, Ga. 30165, with Rev. Lamont Kiser, Rev. Gene Marie, and Rev. James Adams, officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd Funeral Home.

Mrs. Battles will lie in state at the church one hour prior in service on Friday.

Pallbaerers include, Donald Tanner, Jr., Charles Tanner, Joe Adams, Morgan Adams, David Lovine, David Hill, and Chris Grimes, Connor Kiser, Donald Tanner, Sr., and David Ledbetter.
