HHPodcast Interview: With 675 inmates — some with drug, mental concerns, the Floyd County Jail is changing. Sheriff Tim Burkhalter and Chief Deputy Tommy McGuire talk safety, training, a new 60-bed medical wing and what’s ahead.
This podcast is brought to you, in part, by Brand Red Studios on Bales Street in Rome.
Phase one of the addition of a medical wing is about to get under way; the heavy equipment is now on site. Once finished next July, it will feature 60 critically needed beds for some of those inmates who once would have been sheltered at the shuttered Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital. The influx has created new demands — and resulted in extra training for the deputies on duty at the jail three shifts a day.
The medical wing was paid in part by the recent extra penny sales tax approved by Floyd County voters.
Burkhalter and McGuire also talk about today’s jail inmates, about how training has changed for deputies on duty there and programs under way to try to keep the inmates from returning when their time is served. As Burkhalter says, more than 75 percent of those in custody right now will
return to the streets of Floyd County.
