Mr. James Harold Hillis Jr., age 61, of Silver Creek, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2019, in Dekalb County, AL.
Mr. Hillis was born in Ft. Benning, GA on September 12, 1957, son of the former Elsie M. Pledger and the late James Harold Hillis Sr. He was a 1975 graduate of Pepperell High School and attended the University of Arkansas. Mr. Hillis owned and operated Hillis Outdoor Specialist Inc. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, the former Christine McBurnett, to whom he was married on May 28, 1981; a daughter, Jenna Ann Hillis, Silver Creek; twin sons, James Michael “Jimmy” Hillis (Stacey), Cedartown, and Jeffrey Dale Hillis (Meghan), Silver Creek; his mother, Elsie Hillis, Adairsville; 5 grandchildren, Reagan Peek, Cedartown, Piper Anne Hillis, Silver Creek, Loxley James Hillis, Silver Creek, Wheeler Alexander Hillis, Cedartown, and Milla Lou Hillis, Silver Creek; a sister, Druann Hillis Marxen, San Diego, CA; a brother, Roy Dale Hillis (Lisa), Seattle, WA; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at 2:30 p.m. at the graveside in Rome Memorial Park. Brother Shane Morgan will officiate.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Wednesday from noon until 2 p.m.
Gary Wayne Moon passed away June 27, 2019, at home at the age of 56. He was born October 27, 1962. He was a truck driver. He leaves behind his daughter Wendy Michelle Moon, grandchildren Brison Lee Williams and Braylynn Michelle Moon; sisters Nancy and Michael Gilham, twin sister Elaine & Stuart Parker, Nita Carl, brother Randy & Naomi Moon; nieces nephews Mikie Gilham, Sherry Poe, Bubba Parker, Melinda, Melissa, Stephanie Carl, Shane, Bridgett Moon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, E.H. Moon and Jennie Moon.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday July 5, 2019, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the service hour.
Mr. Charles Richard “Snook” Smith, age 91, of Rome, GA, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 30, 2019, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Smith was born in Calhoun, GA, on April 6, 1928, a son of the late Lawrence Barton Smith and Lois Eunice Woods Smith. He had been a resident of Rome and Floyd County the greater part of his life and was a 1948 graduate of Model High School. He had served in the United Sates Marine Corp Reserve.
Prior to retirement, “Snook” was associated with General Electric of Rome for many years. He was a devout member of Shannon United Methodist Church and a member of the Rome Woodcarving Club. “Snook” loved camping and fishing, and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He enjoyed watching old western television shows, especially Gunsmoke. “Snook” was an humble man who was excellent at woodcarving, and he never thought of himself as the master artist he really was.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah Thomas and Charlotte Carnes, and two brothers, Harrison Smith and Edgar Smith.
“Snook” is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Jo Gray Smith, who he married January 14, 1949; two daughters, Janet Smith (special friend, Dudley Rush), and Susan (Tommy) Stephens; two grandchildren, Richard J. “Richie” (Alice) Stephens and Lisa (Nathan) Faircloth; three great-grandchildren, Arielle Faircloth, Natalie Faircloth and Clara York. A host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Salmon Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Ken Freshour and Richie Stephens officiating. Interment will follow in East View Cemetery with Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 Honor Guard of the American Legion conferring graveside rites.
“Snook” will remain at Salmon Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Wednesday from noon until the service hour.
Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers are asked to meet by 1:30 p.m. and include Michael Carnes, Bruce Carnes, Dennis Thomas, Nathan Faircloth, Richard Stephens, Leroy Taylor, Tommy Stephens, Dudley Rush, Alan Byars and the Men’s Sunday School Class from Shannon United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Debra Campbell Seifert, age 65, of Rome, GA, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2019, at a local hospital.
Mrs. Seifert was born in Washington D.C., on December 1, 1953, the daughter of the late George Campbell and Suzanne Zook. She worked as a department manager and retired after 30 years of service from Kroger. She will be remembered by her family as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Debra is survived by her husband of 45 years, Bill Seifert; her sons, Jesse Seifert and Will Seifert (J. J.); her grandchildren, Cooper Seifert, Cole Walker and Carson Walker; her mother, Suzanne Zook; her brothers, Bucky Campbell (Tina) and Bruce Campbell; her sister, Kim Harrison (Ray); several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her dogs, Moo Moo and Pee Wee.
In accordance with Debra’s wishes, she will be cremated and interred at a later date in Washington D. C.

Jane Holsonback Mathis, 65, of Rome died suddenly at her residence Monday, July 1, 2019. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at the chapel of Good Shepherd Funeral Home with reverends Mac McCurry, Clyde Hampton and Horace Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour. A complete announcement will be made Wednesday.
Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Dorsett, age 94, of Rome, GA, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2019, in a local nursing facility.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2019, at 11am Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church. The Rev. Mac McCurry and the Rev. Clyde Hampton will officiate. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with her grandson in-law, the Rev. Eric Hall, officiating.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel, on Friday from 5 until 7 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church or to Heyman HospiceCare at Floyd.
