Some key testing and drilling is under way on the site where Wayne Robinson plans to build a retail/residential center along the banks of the Oostanaula River next to the Courtyard Rome Riverwalk off West Third Street.
The above photo, taken Friday morning by a Hometown Headlines contributor, shows ground testing under way. Robinson says it is part of the preliminary work on The District, ….
These tests are huge in determining what type of pillars and support material would be needed to build on the site, he says. That infrastructure could be a huge expense as the project moves forward, Robinson says, adding the results also will help him set a timetable for what’s next.
What to know about The District:
In February, Robinson and architect Mark Cochran of Cevian Design Lab presented Rome City commissioners with enhanced plans to build The District on West Third Street facing the Oostanaula River adjacent to the Courtyard by Marriott. Robinson remains in talks with the city to develop 2.2 acres with a mixed use concept of residential and retail. Below is a media release about The District, which could be completed by summer 2021.
The District “will be an urban development integrating premium residential, retail and restaurant components. It will provide consumers and residents with an all-encompassing experience of live, shop, and dine, while also connecting them to the surrounding community. The District will be adjacent to the Heritage Riverways Trail System, including the Chief John Ross Memorial Bridge which spans the Oostanaula River. This connection of The District to Downtown Rome will further contribute to the creation of a unified, walkable community between the riverbanks. Apartment residents at The District will have the opportunity to choose from two- and three- bedroom unit types, each with a prevailing sense of style and refuge.
