THE LATEST

Thursday morning: Just a trace of rain “officially” through 10:35 a.m.  National Weather Service briefing is set for 1 this afternoon; we’ll have updates.

‘Significant rainfall’ is on the way, according to the National Weather Service. We’re tracking at least 3 to 4 inches of rain in Northwest Georgia through Sunday, maybe more.

“Forecast rainfall amounts for today through Wednesday, June 12, continue to be high, particularly for this weekend. Widespread rainfall amounts of 4 to 6 inches are expected, with higher amounts up to 8 inches possible for the seven-day period. At this time, highest rainfall amounts are expected over portions of Northeast Georgia and the higher elevations. What’s up: Oppressive high pressure over the region the last few weeks has finally released its hold on Georgia, making way for an active weather pattern to develop. Southwesterly flow will allow an enhanced swath of moisture to remain situated over the southeast U.S. into next week. Forecast models indicate that these excessively moist conditions will promote heavy rainfall over this period.”

OUTLOOK

Today: Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will continue today through tonight. While heavy rain from training showers and storms is the main threat, stronger storms will also be capable of gusty winds and lightning.

Friday-weekend: Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected Friday through Wednesday with the greatest coverage Friday through Monday. Any thunderstorms will be capable of gusty winds, lightning and heavy rain. Flooding could be a growing concern as we approach the end of the week into weekend. Please monitor updates for any changes.
