Big honor for Berry’s Dylan Beasley: Berry College’s Dylan Beasley became the first Viking in the team’s NCAA Division III era to be drafted in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Wednesday afternoon after being selected by the Washington Nationals in the 32nd round (963rd overall). Beasley is the 33rd Berry baseball player to have a chance to compete at the professional level and the first since Stephen Gaylor inked an undrafted deal with the Atlanta Braves in 2014. He is the seventh NCAA Division III player taken in this year’s draft. The former Rome High standout is a junior infielder and pitcher from Rome, ranked top-10 in the Southern Athletic Association with two triples, 34 RBIs, a 5-0 record on the mound and a career-best 48 strikeouts. On the year, he hit a career-high .313 with a .435 slugging percentage. He was also selected to this year’s SAA All-Tournament team.
Rome Braves-Fireflies get a rainout Wednesday night. Media release: The final game of the Rome Braves’ long road trip through Maryland and South Carolina came to a stormy conclusion on Wednesday evening as severe weather forced a cancellation of the series finale at Segra Park between the Braves and Fireflies.
The two teams waited out a two-hour delay and a few brief power outages but were unable to begin the game because of heavy showers in the Columbia area. Because Rome and Columbia do not play again before the completion of the first half of the season, the game will not be rescheduled for a later date.
Rome returns to State Mutual Stadium after nine days on the road and will open their final home stand before the All Star Break against the Lexington Legends on Thursday evening.
First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm. Rome faces the Legends for four games Thursday-Sunday and then entertains the first place Charleston Riverdogs for three games from Monday-Wednesday, June 10-12.
Next: Seven-game home stand starts tonight at 7 vs. Legends.
