SOCCER UPDATE: The YMCA Arsenal Rome Boys U14, 2005 team advanced to the USYS (11 state) Southern Regionals in Baton Rouge on June 21.
They entered the GA State Cup in Cumming as the 11th seed, won their group to advance to the semi-finals this past weekend, and were up against Carrollton’s 2nd seeded GA Storm. Early in the 1st half on Saturday, Steven Villatoro got a breakaway goal off a great pass from Yejezkel Parada. Villatoro followed up with a second goal in the second half. Goalkeeper Jason Cux had 7 saves in the 1st half. Goalkeeper Will Payne had 5 saves in the 2nd.
With the 2-1 victory the team earned State Finalist silver medals and placement on Team Georgia Soccer. They will be representing our state at the Regional tournament in Baton Rouge. State Champions and selected Finalists from Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee will participate.
They also advanced to the finals on Sunday against the 9th-seeded CFA Gainesville ‘Archies’ who they lost to 1-0 in regular season play on March 2nd. The Archies beat 5thseed Roswell Santos 2-1 in the other semi-final Saturday to advance. In Sunday’s championship, Arsenal came up short in a hard-fought battle 3-1. Joshua Hernandez scored the lone goal. Gavyn Williams made the assist from an indirect kick. Goalkeeper Cux had 5 saves. Payne had 8.

Rome Braves drop opener in Columbia, 5-2 . Media release: Columbia starter RHP Simeon Woods-Richardson handcuffed the Rome offense on Monday evening, firing 5 shutout innings while not allowing a hit. His performance set the tone in a 5-2 Rome loss that sent the Braves to their third consecutive defeat of the road trip.
With the game scoreless in the Bottom of the 3rd inning the Fireflies got to Rome starting pitcher RHP Alan Rangel. The first four batters reached base in the inning and all eventually scored. Rangel was unable to work his way out of the inning and was lifted for lefty reliever Dilmer Mejia, who finished the frame and pitched well out of the bullpen.
After Columbia added their final run in the 5th inning the Braves got their first hit in the 6th and then began to make some noise in the 7th. Greg Cullen opened the inning with a double and then scored on a Trey Harris double to center. Logan Brown followed with a single into left to score Harris and bring Rome to within 5-2, but the Braves were never able to bring the tying run to the plate.
Harris finished 1-3 with a double, walk, and an RBI. Cullen was 1-3 with a double, a run scored and was also hit by a pitch. Brown was 1-3 with an RBI. Rangel got the loss, going 2.2 innings while allowing four runs on four hits. He struck out two and walked two. Mejia was solid out of the bullpen, throwing 3.1 innings and allowing only one run on four hits. He struck out two and walked one. Lefty Jake Higginbotham enjoyed one of his best outings of the season, retiring all six batters he faced. He struck out two on the night.
Rome has now lost 10 of 14 games this season against Columbia including 6 of 7 played at Segra Park.
Rome and Columbia continue their three game series on Tuesday evening. First pitch of Game 2 is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Segra Park. Rome will start Venezuelan LHP Gabriel Noguera (2-2, 4.24) while Hagerstown will counter with RHP Willy Taveras (3-5, 3.99).

Rome-Floyd Parks and Rec is starting a Men’s Summer Basketball League. The league is for ages 18 and older and must have graduated high school. There will be two divisions: competitive for players that have played beyond high school or skilled at the game of basketball and recreational for those that love playing basketball and would like to keep active. There can be 7-10 players max per team. Cost is $400 per teach or $50 for individuals (free agents) that sign up without a team. Registration is underway now through June 7. Preseason is the week of June 10. Regular season begins week of June 24.
