From Tuesday evening: Gas leak on Second Avenue had traffic backed up; parts of 200 block evacuated; all clear within an hour.

Tuesday’s rush hour was more intense than usual after a gas leak was reported on Second Avenue near Broad Street. In addition to traffic snarls, some parts of the 200 block of Broad Street were evacuated as a precaution. The leak was secured and the area returned to normal soon afterward.

Floyd 911 reports a gas leak has been reported on Second Avenue and that parts of the 200 block of Broad Street are being evacuated.

“Be advised there is a gas leak on East Second Avenue near Broad Street. Fire department is on scene and they are evacuating some locations in the area. Please avoid the area and find alternate routes. There is no ETA of reopening at this time.”

The largest backup is on traffic heading into downtown Rome, starting near Barron Stadium. The bottleneck continues past SunTrust on Second Avenue. Some outbound traffic snarls also are reported. Broad Street is tight.
