From WRGA 98.7 FM: One man was taken to an Atlanta area burn center after a structure fire in West Rome early Wednesday morning while another man was treated for smoke inhalation.

According to Rome Fire Department Batallion Chief Clete Bonney, firefighters were dispatched to a house that had been converted into an apartment complex at 422 Shorter Ave. at around 4:10 a.m. Bonney said one of the apartment areas was fully engulfed in flames and was extensively damaged. The other two apartments sustained mostly smoke damage.

One man had second- and third-degree burns to his hands, chest and neck area.

Two dogs in the structure did not survive.

Bonney said the fire marshal was on the scene and a cause of the fire had not been determined.

A structure fire on Webster Street off Shorter Avenue in West Rome is causing traffic issues Wednesday morning near Buffalo’s. The fire is north of the westbound lanes as shown in the Google Traffic map above.

Floyd County 911 says firefighters are still on the scene at 6:25 a.m.
