East Rome update:
Witnesses say police action is over and the suspect is in custody.
Saint Mary’s Catholic School has lifted soft lockdown and afternoon dismissal is continuing at a normal pace.
No Rome City Schools were under any phase of a lockdown.
Rome Police have sealed much of Highlands Avenue and LaPorte Avenue as a standoff continues. Witnesses report LaPorte and Ninth Street are involved. Please avoid the area until further notice.
POLK COUNTY UPDATES:
3 p.m. The Rockmart High School Code Blue Preventive Lockdown has been lifted. Normal afternoon release will resume at this time. The investigation found the threat received via phone originated from out of state. We thank everyone for their patience, cooperation and understanding as we strive to keep safety at the forefront for all of our students and staff. We are extremely grateful for the quick response from our Polk School District Police Department, Local Law Enforcement Agencies, Department of Natural Resources, Georgia State Patrol, and Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Update to Rockmart High School Code Blue Preventive Lockdown: At this time the investigation related to the potential threat is still ongoing, therefore, buses at Eastside and Van Wert Elementary will be held to avoid students having long delays sitting in the heat. Elementary car riders will be dismissed at normal time. Rockmart Middle and High students are currently still under a lockdown. Thank you for your continued cooperation and understanding.
From Rockmart High School, 1:15 p.m. Wednesday:
“RHS is on a Code Blue Lockdown due to a situation. This is a preventive lockdown. All doors are locked and no one will be allowed to enter or leave until it it is lifted . Class will continue inside the building.”
From Polk County Schools:
“Polk School District has been made aware of a potential threat via phone to Rockmart High School. In response and as we investigate, both Rockmart High School and Rockmart Middle School are on a Code Blue (heightened state of security) preventive lockdown as a precautionary measure. No students will be allowed to leave the building during this time. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as your student’s safety is our number one priority. Updates will be provided as they are available.”
