The big makeover at the Murphy USA station at the East Rome Walmart continues. The popular gas station with a small store selling drinks, candy and lottery tickets closed barely two weeks ago. Already, the gas station is rubble with a replacement expected to be open by late summer. The change comes as the gas business gets more competitive in Rome and Cartersville with a slew of RaceTrac stores now open or on the way. In East Rome: The nearby Walmart off U.S. 411 and Callier Springs Road also is undergoing a $1.5 million makeover with expanded services on the way (grocery pickup, etc.) The Murphy and Walmart projects are separate from one another.

Thatcher’s Barbecue and Grille gets closer in Summerville. A long time in the making, the regional Thatcher’s Barbecue family is close to opening its restaurant at 10700 Commerce St. in Summerville. We don’t have an opening date as yet but a recent posting on its Facebook page shows the following about hiring needs:

  • Day shift meat smoker/prep and day shift food prep
  • Line cooks and grill cooks
  • Dishwashers
  • Servers and to-go staff
  • Hostess
  • Apply online at Thatchersbbq.com. All interviews and training will take place at the Calhoun location.

Cook Out on the way to Calhoun: Bids are being sought to build a Cook Out restaurant at 610 E. Ga. 53 in Calhoun. The restaurant will be less than 5,000 square feet under roof and will include sitdown dining as well as drive-through service. The project is said to be worth just under $750,000. Bids are due May 22.
