THE LATEST

The suspect in custody has been identified as Dorcus Sanchez Adams Jr., 21, of Rome. Police tell WRGA Adams had a gallon-sized bag of marijuana. Adams was also charged with a probation violation, failure to appear in court, theft by taking and possession of drugs in a drug-free commercial zone.

From WRGA’s David Crowder:

You may have noticed a heavy police presence on Shorter Avenue this afternoon. One person is in custody and two more are at large following a vehicle pursuit that began on Horseleg Creek Road and ended on Carter Avenue.

According to Rome Police, the suspects were involved in a snatch-and-grab robbery. The victim got behind the Chevy Impala and called police.

The Impala went down Horseleg Creek Road, did a u-turn and headed back toward Shorter. Police disengaged the pursuit but the Impala ran the red light at Shorter, causing a wreck. The suspects then bailed on Carter Avenue.

One of them, identified by the victim as the robber, was taken into custody. He also has outstanding warrants.

It was feared that at least one of the suspects ran into Mathis Builders Hardware and Supply, so police got people out of the building and called in the K-9 unit. A search the building turned up nothing, and people were allowed back in. It is believed the suspect or suspects may have exited through the rear of the building.

The search of the area is continuing.
