That didn’t take long. Vacant for just a couple of months off one of Rome’s busiest highways, the former home of Burger King at 2114 Shorter Ave. has been sold to SR GCP LLC, says Realtor Craig McDaniel who handled the deal with Toles, Temple & Wright.

The purchase closed Tuesday and McDaniel says all he knows is that a fast food restaurant is on the way.

Burger King closed in late December as the restaurant jumped the four-lane highway to a revitalized spot that once was home to Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen. Popeye’s is returning to West Rome adjacent to Winslette Pharmacy.

A persistent rumor has been that Del Taco will return to the Rome market at the former Burger King location. We checked with Billy Jensen, who helped open Calhoun’s Del Taco on Dec. 28, on Thursday afternoon. His comments:

“Cannot confirm anything at this point.  No leases have been signed.  We are, however, working on deals in multiple areas.  We are very close on a couple … We are excited to grow!”

The Burger King site sale is the latest in a series of changes for fast food and other small retail in West Rome. McDaniel says commercial interest is extremely hot right now in the community where he grew up. He listed several recent sales and a few others under contract at this time including the very visible corner of Shorter and Coosawattee Avenue next to Ryan’s. No name on that one yet.
