Media release: A rare day without rain welcomed more than 1,600 runners and walkers to Downtown Rome on Saturday as a throng of green, glowing participants ran, jogged, walked and strolled along the trails in the 2019 Harbin Clinic Leprechaun-a-thon.

The event, which continues to be the largest 5K race in Northwest Georgia, also boasts the largest unofficial foam wall of any race in the state, as the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Department filled the Town Green with foam.

“It’s just an awesome sight to be able to see all of these people out running, walking and enjoying the trails and Downtown Rome,” Todd Wofford, Interim Parks and Recreation Director said. “Being able to sit here at the Town Green and watch everyone playing in the foam and lighting up the night with all of their glowing necklaces, bracelets and other items is a lot of fun.”

The race has morphed into a Rome St. Patrick’s Day tradition over the last eight years. The partnership between Harbin Clinic and Parks and Rec has not only encouraged thousands of people to get active and be healthy, but this year all the money raised from the event goes to youth sports scholarships.
“We really enjoy the partnership, because it helps us have a great event in Rome that promotes health and wellness,” Harbin Clinic CEO Kenna Stock said. “Families and people of all ages come out and have a great time for a worthy cause.”

Although the wind packed a bit of a punch and the course had to be altered just a bit thanks to the recent rainfall totals, it did little to slow the runners. Christopher Spate blazed through the 3.1-mile course, finishing in 19:59 to grab the overall title just edging Ben Owens, who finished second with a 20:01. Ali Patrick finished as the female winner with a time of 23:03. Thomas Kislat won the male masters title in 22:46, while Sarah King won the female masters title in 25:09. Ken Pharoh won the grandmasters title with a time of 23:15, and Kimberly White won the female grandmasters title with a time of 35:16.

But the race wasn’t just about fast times, as runners and walkers were treated to confetti cannons at the start, bubbles under the South Broad Bridge and Second Avenue Bridge, fun race signs along the entire course, balloon arches on the pedestrian bridge and a giant wall of green foam, music, lights and more on the Town Green after the race.
“A lot of people worked really hard to put this race on again this year, and I’d like to thank all the volunteers and everyone who played a part in this,” Wofford said. “I’d also like to thank Harbin Clinic for being a fantastic partner and helping make this race the success it is.”

Complete race results will be available soon.
