Obituaries: Dr. William Simmons Davis, Mr. Sherman Taylor Fuller, Mr. Morris “Tookie” Lee, Mrs. Mary Jean Trapp McDaniel, Mary Magadlene (Goble) Payne and Mr. Melvin J. Scott Sr.

Mrs. Mary Jean Trapp McDaniel, age 87, of Rome, passed away on Friday morning, March 15, 2019, at a local healthcare facility.

Mrs. McDaniel was born in Rome, Georgia on August 21, 1931, daughter of the late Seymour and Emma Trapp.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harper O. McDaniel, by a son, Randy A. McDaniel, and by 10 siblings, Nellie Mae Young, Ruby McDaniel, Connie Trapp, Richard Trapp, Exia Powell, Ford Trapp, Sidney Trapp, Nina Comer, Raymond Trapp and Tom Trapp.  Mrs. McDaniel was a 1949 graduate of Rome High School.  She was an active member of Shorter Avenue Baptist Church as long as her health permitted.  Mrs. McDaniel was a wonderful wife and loving mother and grandmother.

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Harrelson (Frank), Kingston; two sons, Craig McDaniel, Rome, and Chris McDaniel, Kingston; 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 18, 2019, at 3 p.m. at Shorter Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeremy Albright and the Rev. Max Tucker officiating.  Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Shorter Avenue Baptist Church on Monday from 1 until 2:45 p.m.

Pallbearers are asked to assemble at the church on Monday at 2:30 p.m. and include: Active: Jeff Harrelson, Brett McDaniel, David Watkins, Barry Murdock, Phil McDaniel and Kevin Randall. Honorary: Bob Powell, Mike Trapp and Wayne Comer.

Mr. Sherman Taylor Fuller, age 68, of Rome passed away Thursday March 14, 2019 at a local hospital.

Mr.Fuller was born June 22, 1950 to the late Robert Lee Fuller and Beatrice Bates Fuller. Mr.Fuller was a salesman at Powell’s for several years. He is preceded by his parents, his wife of 47 years Rita Elaine Fuller, and brother Terry Fuller.

Survivors include children: Kelley (Ashley) Fuller, Jason Fuller, Nada (Tim) Ferguson; grandchildren: Layne Fuller, Andrew Fuller, Matthew Fuller, Blaise Ferguson, Kenzie Fuller, Austin Fuller, Abbie Crabtree; great grandchildren: Carson Fuller, Mattie Fuller; brother: Pete Fuller; sisters: Sharon Causby, Frieda Evans; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will held at 1 P.M. on Monday March 18, 2019 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, with Rev. Rayford Davenport, and Rev. Ricky Davenport officiating. Interment will follow in New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 P.M. until 7 P.M. on Sunday March 17, 2019 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 2750 Shorter Ave. Rome GA. 30165. Mr. Morris “Tookie” Lee, age 99, of Rome passed away Thursday March 14, 2019 at his residence.

Mr. Lee was born on May 3, 1919 to the late William S. Lee and Ella Baker Lee. Mr. Lee played for the Detroit Tigers minor league team. He was in World War II in the Army. Mr. Lee was in the military police, as well a guard for the Unknown Soldier and the White House and a medic in Guam. He worked for Eastern Airlines for 28 years. Mr. Lee was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. When Mr. Lee retired he became a traveler and loved it. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife: Novella Warnock Lee; and two brothers: Gordon F. Lee, and Horace J. Lee.

Survivors include nephew: Jerry Lee (Dot); and niece Candy Lee Davis (John)

Funeral services will held at 12 noon on Saturday March 16, 2019 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, with Rev. Brandon Bruce and Dr. Rodger Whorton officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10 A.M. until service hour on Saturday March 16, 2019 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 2750 Shorter Ave. Rome GA. 30165.

Pallbearers include the following gentlemen: Duane Metcalf, Beau Warnock, Jeremy Lee, Jason Lee, Chad Scoggins, and Richie Scoggins.

Mary Magadlene (Goble) Payne was born on May 2, 1936 in Geraldine, Alabama and passed away on March 15, 2019 in Calhoun, Georgia. A graveside service will be Sunday, March 17 at 2 p.m. at Nazareth Baptist Church Cemetery, 800 County Road 72, Rainsville, AL. The family will receive friends Saturday, March 16 from 4-6 p.m. at Owen Funeral Home, 12 Collins Drive, Cartersville, Ga. Daniel’s Funeral Home.


Dr. William Simmons Davis, 87, of Rome, died on Thursday, March 14, 2019. William was born February 14, 1932 in Brownsville, Mississippi to Grace Sadler and William Penn Davis.

William is survived by his children William S. Davis, Jr. (Kathy), M. Alisa Davis(Todd Nagell), Robert M. Davis (Amy); his grandchildren Sadler and William Davis Ada, Ali, and Davis Allaire, Sam and Garrett Nagell, as well as Mary Grace, Annie, and Frances Davis.

William was preceded in death by his parents as well as his wife of 66 years Frances Mangum Davis.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 22, 2019 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Rome, 100 East 4th Avenue. A memorial service at 2:00 p.m. will follow at the church. A private inurnment will be at Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Rome after the memorial.

Mr. Melvin J. Scott Sr., age 77, of Rome, Ga. (formerly of New Orleans, Louisiana) transitioned  March 15, 2019. Services for Mr. Scott will lake place in New Orleans, Louisiana. Gertrude Geddes Willis Funeral Home of New Orleans will have charge of the final services and disposition. The Funeral Home is located on 2120 Jackson Ave New Orleans, La. ( 504-522-2525).
