Mrs. Brandy Slaton, 32, of Rome, died Sunday afternoon, February 3, 2019, from injuries sustained in an auto accident.

The former Brandy Leigh Wilson, Mrs. Slaton was born in Hamilton, Tennessee, on June 20, 1986, a daughter of Mrs. Nancy Penny Wilson Pierce and the late Ralph Wilson. A homemaker, Mrs. Slaton was a graduate of the Pepperell High School and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Besides her father, Mrs. Slaton was also preceded in death by a brother, Ed Wilson.

Mrs. Slaton is survived by her husband, Brandon Slaton, to whom she was married November 23, 2005; by her daughter, Danielle Hope Slaton; by her stepson, Richard Markrush of Cedartown;  by her mother, Mrs. Nancy Pierce of Rome; by three sisters, Mrs. Tory (Ricardo) Gonzales of Lindale, Mrs. Cassandra (Antonio) Melendres of Lindale, and her twin, Miss Mandi Wilson of Rome; by her brother, Christopher Penny of Rome.  Several nieces and nephews also survive, including special nieces Madison Wilson and Bailey Slaton.

Funeral services for Mrs. Slaton will be held Sunday afternoon, February 10, 2019, at 4 p.m. at John House’s Cave Spring Chapel with Rev. Bert Brooks and Rev. Chad Penny officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday afternoon from 2 p.m. until the service hour. John House’s Cave Spring Chapel.


Mrs. Flora M. Byrd, age 97, of Rome, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2019, at her residence.

Mrs. Byrd was born in Centre, Alabama on February 10, 1921, daughter of the late Julius Harbin and the late Maggie Archer Harbin.  She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. She retired from Tricon where she was a bookkeeper and office manager.  After retiring, she and her husband, Red Byrd, opened a picture framing shop.  She was the founder of Bosom Buddies in Rome.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Wendell Wyche, by her second husband, Sam “Red” Byrd, by her son-in-law, David Law, and by her four brothers.

Mrs. Byrd is survived by her daughter, Joan Law; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2019, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel, with the Rev. Bob Skelton and Dr. Dale Levan officiating.  Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel, on Sunday from 1 until 1:45 p.m.

Pallbearers are asked to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel, on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and include:  Dwight Jones, Will Jones, Claude Corbin, Marvin Williams, Bobby Wood and Charles Graves.  Honorary pallbearers will be the Marine Corp League, Jake Puryear Detachment #1020.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in Mrs. Byrd’s memory to the Marine Corp League, Jake Puryear Detachment #1020, Inc., P. O. Box 265, Rome, GA 30164-2065.


Ronnie Kelley, age 60, of Rome passed away February 5, 2019 at his residence.

Ronnie was born June 15, 1958, Rome, son of Bobbie Hovers Kelley, and the late John Robert Kelley. He was preceded in death by son, Tommie Kelley, brothers, Robert, Harvey, and Junior Kelley, sisters, Sandra Stroud, Elaine Barnes.

Survivors include his children, Ronnie Kelley, Rome; Chassity Hight, Rome; Kandy Brooks, Rome; mother, Bobbie Hovers Kelley, Rome; sisters, Emerye Waits, Rome; Yvonne Highfield, Rome; grandchildren, Little Nick Hight, Dax Kelley, Braylee Kelley, Gabriella Brooks, Haven Brooks, Zachariah Brooks, Jasmin Brooks, Alan Brooks; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday February 9, 2019 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jimmy Carter, officiating. Interment will follow in Rome Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday February 8, 2019 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home.


Nicky Leon Morrison “Nick,” age 63, went home to be with Jesus on February 2, 2019 after a three-year battle with cancer.

Nick was the beloved son of the late Russell Leon and Clara Faye Brown Morrison. Surviving him are sisters Cheryl Fountain (Rocky), of Rome, Donna Stanley (Bryan) of Chatsworth and Lisa Reynolds of Rome. Nick had 4 nephews (Adam, Charlie, Joseph and Joshua) and 1 niece Emily.

The family would like to thank the residents and staff of Renaissance Marquis who loved and cared for Nick these last 13 years. Also thankful for Floyd Medical Center, Rome Rehab and the wonderful team of Heyman Hospice. Nick will be greatly missed but is now at peace and whole again.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday February 6, 2019, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Frank Wood, officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens, with Shaklin-Attaway Post Five Honor Guard will conduct military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the hour of service on Wednesday, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home.

Pallbearers include Charlie Stanley, Adam Reynolds, Josh Reynolds, Joseph Fountain, and Brandon Williams.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to American Cancer Society.
