Special election for state House District 5: Latest results

Republicans Matt Barton and Jesse Vaughn are on the ballot today in parts of Gordon and Murray counties; the winner will join the 2019 General Assembly, filling the seat left open by the death of longtime Rep. John Meadows, R-Calhoun, who died Nov. 13. Barton and Vaughn were the top two voter-getters in the first special election; Tuesday’s race was the runoff.

Precincts: 11 of 11 precincts

Barton: 1,712 or 55%

Vaughn: 1,399 or 45%

Voter turnout: 10.84 percent or 3,114 out of 28,733 eligible voters.


The Floyd County Republican Party’s mass meeting is this Saturday: Doors open at 9 a.m. and shut promptly at 10 a.m. for the biannual meeting where members of the county’s 25 precincts will elect delegates and alternates to send to the Floyd County Republican Party Convention. The meeting is at the Charles C. Parkway Center at 1325 Kingston Highway.  What’s next:

  • March 9: Floyd County Republican Convention: Officers for the next two years will be elected during the meeting.
  • April 13: District 14 Republicans meet.
  • May: State convention in Savannah.
