Jobs: Unemployment rates rose in December across Northwest Georgia. A county-by-county look.

 

Jobless rate increased across the regional last month: December ended the region’s employment picture with a thud with all five local counties posting increases in their respective unemployment rates compared to November of last year. In Chattooga County, the December report was higher than the same month in 2017; in Floyd County, it was close to a draw vs. 12 months earlier. A county-by-county comparison shows:

Floyd: December: 4.4% / November:  3.7% / December 2017: 4.5%

Bartow: December: 3.7% / November: 3.1% / December 2017: 4.1%

Gordon: December: 4.0% / November:  3.0% / December 2017:  4.3%

Polk: December:  4.1% / November: 3.5% / December 2017: 4.7%

Chattooga:  December: 4.3% / November:  4.0% / December 2017:  4.1%

However, Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Northwest Georgia ended 2018 with strong gains in labor force and employed residents. “Last year was a strong one in terms of gains for the economy and jobs,” Butler said. “We saw new records set across the state. Our unemployment rate continued to trend downward. Jobs were created and more Georgians became employed.”

  • The unemployment rate for December, at 3.9 percent, was up 0.6 percent over the previous month. A year ago, the rate was 4.3 percent.
  • The labor force in Northwest Georgia went grew by 5,184 over the past 12 months to end 2018 at 422,668. For the month, the number increased by 1,864.
  • Northwest Georgia also added employed residents in 2018. The year-end total of 406,190 grew by 6,631 over the past 12 months. For the month, the number fell by 705.
  • Claims for unemployment insurance were down by 9 percent in December. They were up by 40 percent when compared to the same month a year ago.
  • Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed 2,161 active job postings in metro Northwest Georgia for December.
  • The Northwest Georgia region includes Bartow, Chattooga, Catoosa, Dade, Fannin, Floyd, Gilmer, Gordon, Haralson, Murray, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Walker, and Whitfield.

A closer look at Bartow County shows:

  • The unemployment rate for December, at 3.7 percent, was up 0.6 percent over the previous month. A year ago, the rate was 4.1 percent.
  • The labor force in Bartow County grew by 747 over the past 12 months to end 2018 at 50,869. That’s an average increase of about 60. For the month, the number increased by 364.
  • Bartow County also added employed residents in 2018. The year-end total of 48,979 grew by 912 over the past 12 months, 76 a month. For December, the number increased by 58.
  • Claims for unemployment insurance were down 30 percent in December. They were up by 54 percent when compared to the same month a year ago.
  • Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed 305 active job postings in metro Bartow County for December.
