We’re putting together some reports on a case that apparently started on the campus of Shorter University and spread into Cedar Bluff

We’ll start with this update courtesy of Shorter’s Dawn Tolbert, Associate Vice President for University Communications:

“We were notified this morning by the Rome Police Department about an individual who had made threats of committing harm to himself and others at Shorter.  The Rome Police Department has officers on campus and is investigating the matter.  Our campus safety personnel are working closely with the Rome Police Department.

“The individual in question is not on campus and classes are operating normally.”

Monday afternoon, radio station WEIS 990 AM and 100.5 FM posted the above photograph as well as the following text:

“Cherokee County law enforcement officials have detained an individual this morning after a BOLO was issued for the subject out of neighboring Floyd County, Ga.

“The lookout was issued by the Rome City Police Department and at this point, it’s unclear exactly what led to the situation – the subject was taken into custody just prior to 8 a.m., in the parking lot of the Country Store on Highway 9 in Cedar Bluff.

“We’ll have additional information as it becomes available.”

We asked Debbie Burnett, Rome’s assistant chief of police, about the BOLO and situation in Cedar Bluff. Her comments from Monday afternoon:

“… This was a separate incident that stemmed from a third party reporting a possible threat at Shorter … The threat has not been substantiated yet. Cherokee County did detain him based on the BOLO but to my knowledge, there are no charges at this time.”

Shorter also canceled is Monday evening basketball games with Mississippi College.
