Obituaries: Mr. Bobby Frank Blackmon, Ms. Yetta Joan Carpenter, Ms. Eleanor Johnson, Mr. James Junior Townsend.

Ms. Yetta Joan Carpenter, age 84, of Rome, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2019, at her residence.

Ms. Carpenter was born in Floyd County, Georgia on May 27, 1934, daughter of the late John A. Young and the late Lois Burdell Young.  She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Shelley, and by four brothers, Hugh, Raymond, Troy and Billy Young.  She worked for a number of years for Pepperell Manufacturing in Lindale.  She was a member of Wax Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Debra Dotson, Rome, and Sondra Hulsey, Cedartown; two sons, Robert Carpenter (Dianne), Rockmart, and Michael Carpenter (Jeanell), Cave Spring; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; two brothers, J. C. Young, Armuchee, and Donald Young, Silver Creek; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. J. Clinton Green officiating.  Interment will follow in Pleasant Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Monday from 5 until 7 p.m.

Pallbearers are asked to assemble on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m and include: Luke Carpenter, Jeremiah Carpenter, Lance Quinn, Chad Quinn, Chase Ploof, Ethan Carpenter, Cayden Head and Austin Chafin.


Ms. Eleanor Johnson, age 65, of Rome, Ga., transitioned January 6, 2019. Complete arrangements will follow at a later date. F. K. Jones Funeral Home.


Mr. Bobby Frank Blackmon, age 88, of Rome, passed away Saturday morning, January 5, 2019, in a local hospital.

Mr. Blackmon was born in Buchanan, GA on June 10, 1930, son of the late Arthur Roy Blackmon and the late Elsie Mae Barber McAdams.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Havrilek Blackmon, and by a grandson, Joshua Robert Brown.

Mr. Blackmon was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during the Korean War.  Prior to his retirement, he was employed with General Electric here in Rome for many years.  In his early years, he was a left-handed pitcher with the San Diego Padres minor league baseball organization.  An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of B. E. A. A. Golf Club and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Bobbie Lynn Tolbert, Elissa Jo Young, and LuGina Brown, all of Rome; a son, David Keith Martin, Rome; 5 grandchildren, Chrisha Jenkins (Chris), Rome, Joseph Fife (Joanna), Rome, Amy Green (Chris), Marietta, Deanna New (Jeremy), Ringgold, and Drew Martin (Rachael), Cartersville; 10 great grandchildren, Lexington, Addison, and Boston Jenkins, Dylan, Brayden, and Austin Green, Kennedy and Campbell New, and J. P. and Rosalie Fife.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2019, at 2 p.m. at the graveside in Floyd Memory Gardens.  The Rev. Jerry Brooks will officiate with the American Legion Post #5 Honor Guard presenting military honors.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Wednesday from 5 until 7 p.m.  At other hours, they may be contacted at their respective homes.


Mr. James Junior Townsend, age 64, of Lindale, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2019, in a local hospital.

Mr. Townsend was born in Floyd County, GA on February 23, 1954, son of the late Rosa Redden Townsend.  He was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Gene and Donny Townsend.  Mr. Townsend was owner and operator of Townsend Dry Wall for over 30 years.  He loved hot rods and drag racing and was a former Car Club member.  He was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include his wife, the former Nellie Lou Crunkelton, to whom he was married on July 28, 1972; a daughter, Brenda Hann (Randall), Rome; 2 sons, Corey Townsend (Sandra), Lindale, and Chris Townsend (Breanna), Rome; a sister, Shirley Redden, Rome; a brother, Carl Townsend, Rockmart; 10 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at 2pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Rob Miller officiating.  Interment will follow in Rome Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Tuesday from 5 until 7pm.  At other hours, they may be contacted at the residence.

Pallbearers are requested to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Wednesday at 1:30pm and include:  Russell Ball, Chris Duncan, Steven Redden, Nick Townsend, Billy Bray, and Michael Crunkelton.
