Obituaries: Mrs. Brenda Saye Ashbough, Pierina “Rena” Bobowiec, Hugh Hull Green, Mr. Samuel H. Hancock, Mr. Kevin Hightower, Mr. Jerry Lee ‘Pooney’ Talley Jr. and Mr. James Woods

Pierina “Rena” Bobowiec passed away December 31, 2018, in Rome, Ga.

Mrs. Bobowiec was born in Cheshire, Mass., on October 31, 1921, to Peter and Margarita (Bianchi) Viani. In 1940, she graduated from the former Adams High School in Adams, Mass.

Mrs. Bobowiec moved to Rome, Ga., in 1953 from Pittsfield, Mass., when her husband, Stephen Bernard Bobowiec, was transferred by General Electric Co. She was a devoted, loving wife and homemaker for 72 years. Rena was an avid reader and card player, and assisted her husband in restoring antique and classic cars for many years.

Mrs. Bobowiec was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Mrs. Bobowiec was preceded in death by her husband and parents as well as a brother, David Paul Viani and a sister, Elvira “Vera” (Viani) Spagnola.

Mrs. Bobowiec is survived by many nieces and nephews.

A Rosary will be said at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 911 N. Broad St., Rome, Ga., at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2019. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. Mrs. Bobowiec will be inurned in the St. Mary’s Parish Garden after Mass. The family will receive friends during a reception in the parish hall after the inurnment.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic School, 401 E. 7th St., Rome, Ga., 30161, or St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 911 N. Broad St., Rome, GA 30161.

Mrs. Brenda Saye Ashbough, 60, Pinehurst, North Carolina, a former native of Rome, Georgia passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2019.

Services for Mrs. Ashbough will be Friday, January 11, 2019, 11:00 am. Thankful Missionary Baptist Church, 935 Spider Webb Dr. Rome, Georgia 30161, with the Pastor Benard Young presiding and the Rev. Timothy McDonald officiating. She will lie in-state from 10:00 am. until the hour of service. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens, 2549 Shorter Ave, Rome, Georgia 30165.

The family will converse at her sister’s residence Mrs. Helen Starr, 38 Berkshire Dr. NE, Rome, Georgia 30161.

Hugh Hull Green was born on January 9, 1939 and passed away on January 4, 2019. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Daniel’s Funeral Home.


Mr. Samuel H. Hancock, age 66, of Rome passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at home with his wife. He was born on September 22, 1952 and was a lifelong resident of Rome. He graduated from West Rome High School and attended Auburn University. He retired from Redmond Hospital in 2014 after 36 years. Sam was a cyclist and a lifelong musician. He played in several bands and collaborated in many other music projects.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Star Runninger Hancock. He was preceded in death by his parents Frances and Leonard Hancock.

Funeral services will not be held at his request. A celebration of his life and love of music will be held at a later date.

Mr. Kevin Hightower, 38, of Fort Payne, Alabama, a former native of Rome, Georgia passed away Monday, December 31, 2018.

Services for Mr. Hightower are incomplete at this time and will be announced at a later date.
