John Schroeder and a “special friend” cozy up in this Facebook photo from 2015.

In February, Schroeder’s New Deli at 406 Broad St. will celebrate 38 years as one of Northwest Georgia’s tastiest landmarks. It began on Feb. 6, 1981, as brothers John and Charlie Schroeder “weren’t sure how the business would develop, but develop it did.”

Nearly four decades later, Schroeder’s still serves specialty sandwiches, nachos and salads as well as newcomers such as pizza, calzone, fried mushrooms, wings, potato skins, pretzels, cold draught and bottled beers and such. It remains popular today and as one of the first stops returning Berry College alums make when in town.

But one thing has changed.

Co-founder John Schroeder has retired and a special Schroeder’s-style sendoff is set for 5 until 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, a few hours after the restaurant closes that day. Brother Charlie Schroeder says it will be the customary celebration similar to some past reunions and will give folks a chance to congratulate the restaurant’s new general manager, Theresa Haney.  The party is open to all.
