Blood Assurance is calling on community members to make a blood donation at a local donor center or bloodmobile as soon as possible. Blood Assurance is in critical need of B-negative blood and is in urgent need of A-positive, A-negative, O-negative, and O-positive blood.
“B-negative is at a less than one day supply and O-, O+, A-, and A+ are at a less than three day supply. Our goal is to keep a five day supply of each blood type, so we are asking the community to please consider donating over these next several days,” says Mandy Perry, community liaison. “The holidays are historically a difficult time for blood donations with collections down due to illness and holiday travels and usage up due to end-of-the-year elective surgeries, medical emergence, and traumas.”
In response to the critical need, the Blood Assurance Donor Center located in Midtown Crossing Shopping Center in Rome and the center in Cartersville at 334 Cherokee Place will be open 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. today (New Year’s Day), and then resume normal business hours of 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. starting on Wednesday, Jan. 2 – Friday, Jan. 4. The center will also be open as usual on Saturday, January 5 as from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. For more info or to schedule an appointment donors can call the center at 706-235-9853.
Also an additional mobile drive has been scheduled for tomorrow, New Year’s Day, Jan. 1 from 11 am. – 3 p.m. at the West Rome Walmart off Redmond Road. Donors can schedule an appointment for this drive at https://donor.bloodassurance.org/donor/schedules/center_view/13/1546300800/#tabs-1 or text BAGIVE to 444999.
To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 18 years old (16 and 17 years old with parental consent), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health. Donors are asked to drink plenty of fluids — avoiding caffeine — and eat a meal that is rich in iron prior to donating. To schedule an appointment at a donor center or blood drive near you, please visit www.bloodassurance.org, call 800-962-0628 or text ‘BAGIVE’ to 444999.
