Obituary of Sammie Howell Peirson

Sammie H Peirson, 84, of Rome, wife of Samuel Peirson, passed away peacefully Friday, December 28, 2018.

Sammie was born in Rome, Ga in 1934 and enjoyed living here until college. She married and had 4 children; Kitty, Lucy, Gib (predeceased) and Helen. In 1986 Sammie married Mr. Samuel Peirson and they cherished one another until the moment she passed.

Their time together has been lively; raising children (Samantha and Helen), traveling to see grandchildren (Grady, Kate, Pat, Megan, Amelia, Wylie and Zoie) and keeping gardens each season. Sammie’s life will be remembered as the friend everyone wishes they had. She loved talking on the phone and connecting with you regularly. She was a true friend to so many and will be missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 10am in the chapel of Daniels Funeral Home, 901 East 2nd Ave, Rome Ga. The family will receive friends directly after the memorial service for a short reception at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers please consider a contribution to her favorite Rome Area Historical Museum. Sammie was completely passionate about preserving the Rome, Georgia history as her family homestead is here.


Obituary of Richard Allen Ables

Richard Allen Ables was born on June 13, 1939 and passed away on December 29, 2018. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Daniel’s Funeral Home.

Mrs. Merrian Caldwell, 82, of Rome, Georgia transitioned to glory on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at a local hospital.

Services for Mrs. Caldwell are incomplete and will be announced at a later date.

John Joseph Desmond, age 82, passed away December 25, 2018. Mr. Desmond was a long time resident of Sylvester, GA before spending the last 10 years in Rome.

Mr. Desmond is preceded in death by parents, John and Helen Desmond; Sister, Patricia Belston. Mr. Desmond is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary Ann Desmond; Children, Jeanmarie (David) White, Dr. John (Penny) Desmond; Grandchildren, Thomas White, Mary White, Quinn Desmond, and Sam Desmond; Great-granddaughter, Lily Harris-White.

A rosary service will be conducted in the chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home on Monday, December 31, 2018 at 11:00 am. A reception will follow the rosary service where family will receive friends.


Mrs. Beatrice Ragland Kidd, age 80, of Rome, Ga. transitioned December 29, 2018. Complete arrangements will follow at a later date. Please keep the family lifted up in prayer.

Jackie Eugene Quinn, age 75, of Rome passed away Saturday December 29, 2018 in a local hospital.

Jackie was born December 23, 1943, in Floyd County, a son of the late Oda Quinn, and Mary Frances Brock Quinn. He was a member of Lakeview Baptist. He was preceded in death his brothers, Jimmy Lamar and Johnny Charles Quinn.

Survivor include his wife, Betty Waits Quinn, step son, Bobby Waits, grandsons, Buck Jeter, and Ethan Waits, brother, J.B. (Jan) Quinn, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 6:00 P.M. Wednesday January 2, 2018 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 4:00 P.M. until the service hour on Wednesday, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 2750 Shorter Ave. Rome, Ga. 30165.

Obituary of Carolyn Thompson Smith

Carolyn Thompson Smith, 87, passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2018 in Rome, GA. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Martha Adeline Thompson; a brother, James Thompson; and sister, Martha Adkinson. Born in Samson, AL, Carolyn graduated high school, and graduated from Berry College in 1953 with a bachelor’s degree. She received a master’s degree from the University of Alabama.

Carolyn returned to Berry College in 1962 and served Berry until 1996. During her tenure there, she held many titles including Planned Giving Officer, Alumni and Development Officer, Regional Director of Development, Director of Alumni Affairs, Director of Current Support, Director of Annual Giving, Director of Alumni Services, and Alumni Secretary. She held the title of Planned Giving Officer when she retired from Berry. She also served as chaplain of the alumni association. She was a Lifetime member of the Alumni Council. Carolyn was honored by the Berry Board of Trustees with the title of Alumni Director and Advancement Officer Emerita in 2006.

Following her retirement from Berry, Carolyn was accepted to Columbia Theological Seminary, where she received a Master of Divinity Degree in 2000. She then worked as a supply pastor at several churches until she retired from the profession in 2014.

Carolyn was a member of several organizations including The Daughter’s of Berry, Kiwanis, Pilot, the Lions Club and she was an officer in the Carpet Capital Chapter of the Berry Alumni Association. She loved reading, traveling, and gardening,

Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Teresa (Harvey) Puckett of Rome, GA; her son, Clifford (Terri) Smith of Belize; and a daughter-of-the-heart, Suzanne Killcreas of Dalton, GA; grandchildren Jennifer (John) Marshie of Miami Beach, FL; Forrest (Anmarie) Smith of Atlanta, GA; Graham Smith of Eureka, CA; Alexia Koziatek of Ashville, NC; Trevor Puckett of Columbia, SC; great-grandchildren Willow and River Gillespie of Canton, GA; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Friday, January 4, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mount Berry Chapel at Berry College with Rev. Eleana Garrett and Rev. Will Scott officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.

Elizabeth W. Carson-Williams

Ms. Elizabeth Warren Carson-Williams, 80, of Rome, Georgia passed on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at a local nursing facility.

Elizabeth was born on April 17, 1938 in Rome, Georgia.  She was the daughter of the late Homer and Etta Warren.  She was preceded in death by her son, Michael J. Davis and brother, George (Dorothy) Jackson.

Left to cherish Elizabeth’s memory are her children, Bessie Mae Allen, Pastor Robert (Patricia) Carson, Jr., Deacon Johnny (Michelle) Carson; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; two special friends, Ms. Mary Carson and Ms. Mary Westfield, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, loved ones and friends.

Homegoing services for Ms. Carson-Williams will be held on Monday, December 31, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. at New Zion Baptist Church, with Pastor Robert Carson, Jr. delivering the eulogy.  She will lie in-state from 12:00 P.M. until the funeral hour.  Interment will follow the service at Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery.
