Advance voting in the House District 5 special election continues through Jan. 4.
A Jan. 8 election date is set but advance voting continues in the parts of Gordon and Murray counties to fill the seat of the late state Rep. John Meadows. A run-off, if needed, would be held Feb. 5. Six candidates, including five Republicans and one Democrat, qualified for the election. Candidates who qualified:
- Matt Barton, Republican
- Steve Cochran, Republican
- Lawrence (Larry) Massey Jr., Republican
- Brian Rosser, Democrat
- Scott Tidwell, Republican
- Jessie L. Vaughn, Republican
More than 800 people have voted early so far. Advance voting continues through Jan. 4 at the exception that the Gordon County Board of Elections and Voter Registration Office (closed Jan. 1). To cast your ballot early, go to 215 N Wall St., Calhoun. On Jan. 8: Precincts will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Georgia Secretary of State Robyn A. Crittenden has certified the election results of the Dec. 18 State House District 14 Special Primary Election, won by Mitchell Scoggins. In accordance with state law, Floyd and Bartow counties have submitted their certified election results. Pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 21-2-499, after receipt of certified election results from the county election superintendents, the Secretary of State has tabulated, computed, canvassed, and certified the votes cast. Scoggins will attend the opening of the General Assembly on Jan. 14.
