HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Rome High’s standout back, Jamious Griffin, has been named as a finalist for the Touchdown Club of Atlanta’s Mr. Georgia Football Award. The winner will be announced on Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Wyndham Atlanta Galleria. Past winners include Jake Fromm and Justin Fields, both outstanding Georgia high school quarterbacks who now play with the University of Georgia’s Bulldogs. Players nominated for this award must exhibit a high level of play on the field and show exemplary behavior in their communities.

State championships for high school football:

Class 2A: Rockmart vs. Heard Co., Dec. 12 at 1 p.m., Mercedes Benz Stadium. Tickets: Rockmart will pre-sale tickets for the BENZ starting Monday, Dec. 3. Pre-sale tickets will be $22.00 and $30.00 at door. You can purchase tickets at Rockmart High School, Raceway, City Body, Rockmart Florist, and Whiteheads Florist. Polk County Schools will be closed on Dec. 12 for the championship game.

Class 4A: Cartersville vs. Blessed Trinity, Dec. 12 at 4:30 p.m., Mercedes Benz Stadium. Cartersville City Schools will have a half-day of class on Dec. 12 for the championship game.

Saturday: Registration continues for the annual #JamieStrong Rome Half Marathon to be held at State Mutual Stadium. In addition to the 13.1-mile Half Marathon, the event that is presented by GoGo Running includes a Half Marathon Relay and a 5- kilometer race. The Rome Half will once again benefit area middle and high school running programs with some of the proceeds benefiting the family of Rome teen runner Jamie Hughes (JamieStrong). All of the races start and end at State Mutual Stadium, with the 5k starting at 8 a.m. and the Half Marathon and Relay starting at 8:05. Half Marathon, Relay, and 5k Finishers receive long sleeve tech T’s, and will enjoy a post-race pancake breakfast provided by the Rome Braves. The area’s high school teams and athletes will be honored the night before at the 2018 GoGo Running All-Area Cross Country Banquet that will be held Thursday, Dec. 6.
