THE LATEST
Special weather statement from the National Weather Service, Peachtree City:
“An unseasonably cold air mass has settled over the state with temperatures this afternoon struggling to get above 40 degrees in North Georgia. Northwest winds are also strong this afternoon and tonight with winds gusting to 25 mph. The combination of cold temperatures and strong winds will cause wind chill readings to the teens and single digits through Wednesday morning. Low temperatures tonight will range from 18 to 28 degrees with a hard freeze expected across the state. While the growing season has mostly ended for north and central Georgia, some sensitive plants and agriculture may still be susceptible to the very cold temperatures and wind chill values. Residents are encouraged to protect any vegetation that are at risk for damage from the cold weather.”
Local impact: We’re looking at a morning low of 23 degrees at 7 a.m. with a wind chill of 18 degrees. We should rise above freezing (32 degrees) between 10 and 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Helping those in need: Community Share Ministries in Cedartown is opening up Connect Church to help house those seeking refugee from the cold. Both the men’s and women’s shelters already are full. Expanded details
