From Polk County Schools:  “Polk School District has been monitoring the condition of the roads all afternoon and evening. We have been in constant contact with public works, 911, and the Polk School District Transportation Department, and will continue to do so through the early morning hours. Because of the possibility of the roads in many parts of the county already unsafe or will become unsafe for school transportation, we will be delaying school tomorrow by two hours. The delay will allow our buses to pick up students during daylight hours. Good road visibility will be necessary for drivers to determine whether the use of an alternate road on their route would be a safer option for our students when they encounter an excess of water on the road.

From Bartow County Schools: “School is in session today, Nov. 13. We appreciate your continued patience as we work to get all bus-riders safely to school. Please continue to use caution while on all Bartow County roads and allow extra time to get to school this morning. We’ll keep you updated on road conditions throughout the day.”

Cartersville City Schools monitoring road conditions: “Because of recent heavy rainfall, we are closely monitoring the road conditions on which our school buses will travel in the morning. If the need arises, we will inform you early Tuesday morning of any transportation changes. Thank you and please remember to drive safely.”

Gordon County Schools will operate on a normal schedule today: However, students whose roads are impacted by flooding or are closed because of weather-related issues will have their absence or tardy forgiven. Buses will not be able to travel roads that are closed or flooded. Please use extreme caution if driving to school, even if flooding is not apparent at this time. Should conditions worsen overnight to cause plans to change, Gordon County Schools will notify Tuesday. Currently, the list of road closures from the Gordon County Sheriff’s Department is as follows:
T Johnson
Langford
Lick Creek
Taylor Town
B Johnson
Covington Bridge
Sam Hunt
Miller Ferry
Beamer Circle
Mauldin Road
Oak Grove

Why the concern? Bus travel and access to neighborhoods is one issue. Another is all the teen drivers en route to high school who might not be as familiar with driving in such conditions.
