Previous report:

From Rome Police: Today we remember Deputy Chief Lonzo Roberson (1950-2018). He passed away this afternoon with his loving family by his side. Deputy Chief Roberson dedicated the majority of his life serving this community at the Rome Police Department. He began his career here in August 1972 and retired in December 2012. Deputy Chief Roberson even came out of retirement to serve as Interim Chief at the Rome Police Department in 2016. Thank you Deputy Chief Lonzo Roberson for your dedication and service. You will be missed by so many!

Chief Denise Downer-McKinney says,”He was Deputy Chief when I start to work at the Department about 32-33 years ago. He was instrumental in a lot of things that lead to the growth of the department. He was Chief (Hubert) Smith’s right-hand man and made sure everything worked smoothly and effectively. He was a fair man…always did what was best for the Rome Police Department and City of Rome.”

From Hometown Headlines: Roberson served as Interim Rome Police Chief following the retirement of Chief Elaine Snow until current Chief Denise Downer-McKinney was selected for the position in March 2016. He also served in the same role when former Chief Hubert Smith retired in 2010. He has two sons, Major Dave Roberson with Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, and Division Chief Brad Roberson with Rome-Floyd Fire Department. We will have updates on funeral services once they are announced.
