The RomeGaCares team with members from the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office and Posse have been hard at work in Port St. Joe and Apalachicola this weekend since arriving on Friday.

“We are working alongside Sheriffs and churches in Gulf, Franklin and Liberty Counties. (Apalachicola, Carrabelle and Port St Joe),” says Sheriff Tim Burkhalter, who is with the team. “The areas of devastation can’t be properly described with mere words. We are working street-by-street in 3 counties alongside people from all over the country. We have met church groups doing their mission work here instead of a foreign country.

“The communities meet us at the street asking us for help with trees, debris removal and tarps for their roofs. We concentrate on the poor, needy, uninsured and elderly. Our hearts are blessed house by house. Chaplain Cater has prayers with most every group and our responders.”

The team is bunking at the Frankin County Jail, which is located in the Apalachicola National Forest. Burkhalter says they had some unexpected visitors on Friday night.

“A first for us this year occurred last night as we slept at the Franklin County Jail. Three bears decided to snack on our candy we had stored for kids. We won’t make that mistake again,” he says.

The team is due back to Rome on Tuesday. Photos below from Burkhalter.
