Rome High student back in jail on three counts of having a weapon on/near school grounds, misdemeanor marijuana charge. Second arrest since early August.

UPDATES

This update from Debbie Burnett, assistant chief of Rome Police:

“Basically what happened was a school employee smelled the odor of marijuana on the student and reported that to the principal. He then conducted an administrative search of the students car. Once the items were found it, was turned over to the SRO (school resource officer) as it became a criminal case at that time. Because the student is 17 he was arrested and charged as an adult.”

FIRST REPORT

A Rome teen has been charged with three counts of carrying weapons within school safety zones and functions or on school property as well as misdemeanor marijuana possession charges, according to Floyd County Jail reports.

Kaleb Logan Broadaway, 17, of 4 Kirkwood St., was arrested by Rome Police at 1000 Veterans Memorial Highway — the address of Rome High — on Thursday.

We asked Rome City Schools’ officials about where the weapons and drugs were in the suspects car, what led to the arrest and any school actions/reactions such as a lockdown.

The response from spokeswoman Tashia Twyman: “Rome City Schools cannot comment on a student’s educational records or discipline issues.¬†Please direct any questions regarding this matter to the City of Rome Police.” She added that RHS did not go under a lockdown because of the situation.

We will have more from the police Friday morning.

This is the second time Broadaway has been arrested in recent months. WRGA’s archive shows the following:

A teenager is facing drug and weapons charges following his arrest on East Fourth Avenue in Rome Saturday (Aug. 3). According to Floyd County Jail records, 17-year old Kaleb Logan Broadaway of a Kirkland Street address had marijuana in the floor of his vehicle, along with a 9 mm pistol and a glass smoking pipe. Broadaway was charged with possession of a pistol or revolver by someone under the age of 18, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and possession of drug-related objects.
