With just over 12,600 early votes cast this week across the region, local elections officials are surprised by the “heavy turnout” for this year’s election.
Floyd County finished the week with 3,890 votes cast between the two locations at the elections office in downtown Rome and Garden Lakes Baptist Church.
“The turnout has been been unbelievable. It is much higher than any one expected,” says Steve Miller, chair of the Floyd County Board of Elections. “We are tracking now at 120% higher than this same time period last year. It’s been heavy all week and we don’t expect it to slow down.”
Bartow County has also seen lots of voters this week with 3,281 in-person voters at the Bartow Voter Registration and Elections Office.
“The turnout has be extraordinarily high for a midterm election – about 100 votes away from what we saw at this point in the 2016 Presidential Election. I hope that this trend continues strong into election day,” says Joseph Kirk, Bartow Elections supervisor.
Gordon County had a total of 2,634 votes cast this week. “We’ve have a heavy turnout this week, like we saw in the 2016 Presidential election. I think it will continue to be heavy for th next two weeks,” says Shea Hicks, with Gordon County Elections Office.
Polk County had a total of 2,802 voters this week between their two locations in Cedartown and Rockmart. Officials say its been “steady” all week with voters.
