Obituaries: Mr. Henry Burge, Joshua James Colvin and Ms. Kathy Reed

Joshua James Colvin, age 15, of Rome, passed away on October 5, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family.

Josh leaves behind his parents, Nicole and Zachary Colvin, and his sisters, Lily and Jillian.  Josh also leaves behind many other family members and numerous friends.

Joshua was a Special Olympics athlete though he really enjoyed the Olympics for catching up with old friends as well as making new friends.  Who needs sports when you can have social hour with your friends?  He was also a baseball player and loved rolling through the bases and feeling the wind in his face, but again mostly for seeing his friends.  Josh was definitely a social butterfly.  Joshua was a huge Harry Potter fan and enjoyed listening to the books with his dad and watching the movies with his family.  Josh also had Harry Potter all over his bedroom which he enjoyed since we were never able to get him to Harry Potter World.  We are pretty sure he was the biggest Disney Channel fan that lives on the planet, as he has watched it daily his whole life and truly didn’t want to watch anything else.  Josh loved music in all forms, but some of his favorite music was Metallica.  His mom, Nicole, blames that on the fact that she listened to that while she was pregnant with him.  Let’s be honest though, that is some pretty great musical taste!

How would one describe Josh?  He had the absolute best smile that lit up a room.  Josh knew how to use that smile to win over everyone especially the ladies!  He had an incredible sense of humor that left us shaking our heads as he echoed with his laughter.  He was considered non-verbal, but he spoke more with his eyes and face than most people do with their words.  Josh was so smart and understood things beyond his young years.  The fact he was unable to verbalize did not stop him from spending time with his friends and family and enjoying life!  Josh loved road trips to the aquariums, zoos, parks (when it wasn’t broiling outside) and even car rides with no destination in mind as well as walking the mall so he could stroll past the Victoria Secrets window displays.  Josh loved making Mom sigh and say, “really Josh, do we need to go past the store again?”  He would laugh every time.  One of his favorite past times though was watching and picking at his sisters.  Josh loved his sisters with every fiber of his being and he encouraged them to do things they weren’t supposed to do.  He also was good at accidently tripping or poking his sisters when they became too much.  He was a master at making it look like an accident as they fell.  If you looked quick enough, you could see him smile and roll his eyes as he did it.  Josh also was an animal lover and enjoyed time with all animals especially his cats.

Josh is gone way too soon, but in his short time, taught us that we should never judge a book by its cover.  That sometimes that best gifts don’t come in all the perfect wrapping paper but instead the ones that are a bit crinkled around the edges.  If you can take one thing from what Josh taught us, it is that you need to go out and smile at everyone you see.  Smile at everyone you pass, even those you deem not worthy to smile at, just smile.  He was our light as well as to all those that knew him and the world will be darker without him in it.
