HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

John McClellan’s high school picks: Region 7-AA showdown between Pepperell, Rockmart this Friday — Yellow Jackets by 19. Easy night ahead for Rome, Cartersville, Calhoun. McCellan

Rockmart jumps to no. 3 in AA state football poll. Rome, Calhoun remain in top spots; Cartersville no. 4. Rankings

2018 high school football season. High School 2018.

COLLEGES/football:

Georgia holds no. 2 spot in latest AP Top 25. The SEC’s vice grip on the Top 25 continued with Alabama, Georgia and LSU are holding their spots from the previous week. The news: Ohio State moved to no. 3 while Clemson (no. 2 at the start of the season) fell to no. 4 even with a 5-0 record.

Also from the SEC: Auburn moved up to no. 8, Kentucky jumped to no. 13 and Florida returned (no. 22) after defeating previously ranked Mississippi State.

Also from the ACC: Miami was no. 17,  North Carolina State was no. 23 (4-0 record) and Virginia Tech was no. 24.

There’s something fitting about Berry’s rise to no. 14 in the latest Division III football poll. Saturday’s  61-0 rout of Austin College was the primary factor behind the three-spot jump by the undefeated Vikings. Click rankings. But maybe something else is involved. As shown in the post-game photo above, the Vikings were holding a flag commemorating no. 14 — Justus Edwards, who was seriously injured in the previous game. From start to finish, the Vikings kept their fallen brother in their thoughts on the field and on the sidelines — including his jersey. An online fund established last week to help his family with related costs during his recovery had a target of $2,500. As of Monday morning, more than $17,500 had been donated. How to help
