USA Today has nominated Rome High’s Jamious Griffin as one of 14 players nationwide in the newspaper’s weekly Super 25 Top Star poll. Voting ends at noon Thursday.  Griffin was  nominated following Rome High’s 35-6 win over Kell last Friday. He had 235 yards rush and four touchdowns. To vote: USA TODAY

COLLEGE NOTES

The Berry College volleyball team jumped one spot to No. 24 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25, the organization announced on Tuesday. The Vikings currently sit at 4-2 on the year, going 2-1 last weekend at the Emory National Tournament. Berry defeated Whitworth and Tufts in straight sets before falling to Emory, now ranked No. 6, 3-0. Berry currently leads the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) in blocks per set (2.24). The Vikings will open SAA competition tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. at home against Oglethorpe University. Vikings

Saturday: The 32nd Annual Roman Rumble 5K/Health Walk set for Ridge Ferry Park, benefiting Harbor House. Preregistration starts at 7:30 a.m. and the race at 8 a.m. The walk starts a few minutes later. Pre-race packet pick up available on Friday Sept. 14 from 4:30-6 p.m. at Pro-Performance, 100 Broad St. No public roads. Out and back course follows a scenic paved path along the Oostanaula River. Mostly flat with some rolling hills. Race will be held rain or shine. Bicycles, skateboards, baby joggers or strollers, roller skates or inline skates and other wheeled conveyances, radio headsets and animals are not permitted because of insurance considerations.For more: Roman Rumble.

Sept. 29: Heroes are getting ready to run, walk, fly and maybe even crawl into Rome for the 2018 edition of the Harbin Hero Hustle 5K and two-mile health walk. But before the race can soar into action, the Harbin Heroes need your help in selecting five local charities to participate in the Harbin Hero Challenge. Dec. 8: Registration is under way for the annual #JamieStrong Rome Half Marathon to be held at State Mutual Stadium. In addition to the 13.1-mile Half Marathon, the event

that is presented by GoGo Running includes a Half Marathon Relay and a 5- kilometer race. The Rome Half will once again benefit area middle and high school running
programs with some of the proceeds benefiting Rome teen runner Jamie Hughes and his family as a determined Jamie fights Osteosarcoma, a very rare but aggressive bone cancer that attacks children in their growth spurts. All of the races start and end at State Mutual Stadium, with the 5k starting at 8 a.m. and the Half Marathon and Relay starting at 8:05. Half Marathon, Relay, and 5k Finishers receive long sleeve tech T’s, and will enjoy a post-race pancake breakfast provided by the Rome Braves. The area’s high school teams and athletes will be honored the night before at the 2018 GoGo Running All-Area Cross Country Banquet that will be held Friday, Dec. 7.
