Foster Hugh Selman, Sr., Lt. Col. (Ret.) US Air Force, age 89, of Texas Valley, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 4, 2018, at Redmond Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family.
Lt. Col. Selman was born in Floyd County, GA, February 25, 1929, the son of the late Foster Selman who passed away March 30, 1964, and Myrtle Brown Selman, who passed away July 4, 1980. He was a graduate of Armuchee High School, Jacksonville State University, and Peabody College, Nashville, TN. He taught and coached at Armuchee High School from 1953-1980. After retiring, he taught and coached golf at Riverside Military Academy.
He began as an Army recruit and retired as Lt. Col. in the Air Force with over 38 years of combined service. He served on the Wing Commander’s Staff (Maj. General) where his unit was awarded the “AF Outstanding Unit Award” for seven consecutive years.
He was a Mason and a member of New Armuchee Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon Emeritus, Sunday school teacher, and choir member.
He was a life member of the National Association for Uniformed Services, Military Officer Association of America, Air Force Association (first president of Coosa Valley AFA), Reserve Officers Association, Floyd-Rome Retired Teachers Association, and Georgia Retired Teachers Association.
The North Floyd Softball Complex was named in his honor July 28, 2011, and he was also inducted into the 2013 Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement, February 25, 2013, his 84th birthday.
He was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Bettie Polston Selman, and infant grandson, Samuel Tribble Hale Robison.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia McDermont Selman; a daughter, Leigh Selman Robison and her husband, William H. Robison, IV (Robbie); a son, Foster Hugh Selman, Jr. (Trip) and his wife, Karen Smith Selman; grandchildren, William H. Robison, V (Quinn), Ian Tribble Robison (Tribb) and his wife, Teresa Pieklik Robison; Foster Hugh Selman, III (Trey), Sarah Louise Selman, great-grandson, Ian William Robison, and nephew, Joseph Albert Early, III (Jae).
Visitation will be Saturday, July 7, 2018, at Daniel’s Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 8, 2018, at New Armuchee Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Mikel Garrett and the Rev. Horace Stewart officiating. Mr. Mac Eubanks will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Armuchee Cemetery in Texas Valley with full military honors.
Pallbearers will be his son-in-law, three grandsons, nephew, and Dr. Kenn Griffith. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to New Armuchee Baptist Church, 5385 Martha Berry Highway, Armuchee, GA 30105.
Billy Carson Buchanan, age 51, of Rome passed away Sunday 1, 2018 at his residence.
Billy was born March 15, 1967, in Murray County, Ga. He was preceded in death by his father, George Buchanan, brother, Buster Buchanan, sister, Tammy Buchanan. Survivors include his wife Trudy Beach Buchanan, mother, Will Dee Mantooth Buchanan, children, Brittany Beach, Andrew Casey, brothers, Jim Buchanan, Gary Keith, Rev. Nick Keith, Doug Qualls, sisters, Diane Pell, and Vickie Qualls.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M. Monday July 9, 2018 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Nick Keith, officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00 P.M. until the hour of service, on Monday.

Marion Jacqueline “Jackie” Howell, 89, of Rome, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2018 at a local hospital. Mrs. Howell was born in Summerville, Georgia on September 27, 1928, she was the daughter of the late W. Grady Newsome and the late Lossie W. Newsome. Mrs. Howell was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph L. Howell to whom she married on May 17, 1945; and also her sister, Doris N. Smith of Charleston, S.C.
Mrs. Howell spent a good part of her life being a homemaker for her military husband and her two girls. She was good at moving and setting up a new home for her family. She also worked at the Desota Theater in the early 1950’s; she was the pretty young girl working the ticket booth. She attended Friendship Baptist Church. She loved reading, shopping, bargain hunting and rummaging through antique stores.
Mrs. Howell is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Bob Bagley and Kim and Rickey Teems, all of Rome; her grandchildren, Brig Larry (Matt), Ryan Teems (Michelle) and Josh Teems (Maegan); her 7 great grandchildren; and her sister, Patricia N. Popham.
A Graveside Celebration Service will be held on Monday, July 9, 2018 at 1:00 pm at East View Cemetery with Danny Wade officiating.

Mrs. Shirley Faye Martin, age 73, of Silver Creek, passed away on Friday, July 6, 2018, at her residence.
Mrs. Martin was born in Floyd County on December 25, 1944, daughter of the late James Floyd Smith and the late Ida Alexander Smith. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She was a graduate of Coosa High School in the class of 1963. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed working in her flower garden. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Kathy Smith and Wanda Phillips and her husband, Jim Phillips, and by a brother-in-law, Clarence McBurnett.
Survivors include her husband, William Franklin “Frank” Martin, to whom she was married on June 5, 1964; a son, Michael Martin, and his wife, Allison, Silver Creek; 2 daughters, Melissa Hancock, and her husband, Keith, McDonough, GA and Amanda Martin, Lindale; 2 grandchildren, Kameron and Megan Hancock; 1 brother, Bennie Smith, and his wife, Toni, Rome; 2 sisters, Ann McBurnett and Jimmie Roberts, both of Rome; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 9, 2018, at 12 noon at the graveside in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Eric Whelchel will officiate.

Jennifer Diane Ratcliff, age 46, of Rome passed away Monday July 2, 2018 at her residence.
Ms Ratcliff was born April 5, 1972, in DeKalb County, a daughter of the late Frank Ratcliff, and Linda Breeden Ratcliff.
Survivor include her children, Ricky Walker, Justin Hudgins, Chandler Caldwell, Aleasha Caldwell, Kiera Caldwell, Khaila Sanford Newman, brother, Tracy Ratcliff, Sister, Donna Kercher Burns, 7 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.
