Rome Braves fall 2-1 to Kannapolis in pitching duel. Media release: The Kannapolis Intimidators topped the Rome Braves 2-1 Monday night at State Mutual Stadium before a crowd of 1,480.

Rome scored their only run in the second inning on a single by Austin Bush to plate Drew Lugbauer for the 1-0 score. The Intimidators answered in the sixth on a RBI line drive single from Michael Hickman to tie the game at 1-1. Kannapolis took the lead in the seventh thanks to a throwing error by Jean Carlos Encarnacion allowing a run to score. Intimidators’ pitching held the lead for the rest of the way for the 2-1 final.

Kannapolis starter Parker Rigler (6-3) gets the win and William Kincanon (2) gets the save. Rome’s Brandon White (2-3) gets the loss in relief.

Roster moves:  The Rome Braves announce the following roster moves:

  • Rome receives INF Shean Michel from Kissimmee (Florida State League)
  • INF Isranel Wilson has been transferred to Kissimmee
  • INF Justin Smith has been transferred to Danville (Appalachian League)
  • Rome receives INF Greyson Jenista from Danville

Atlanta Braves: The Braves’ could have three players int he National League’s starting lineup for the All-Star game. According to latest ballot update released late Monday, Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis are still sitting pretty, but Ozzie Albies has a slim lead ahead of Reds’ Scooter Gennett.  Fans may cast votes for starters online using the 2018 Camping World MLB All-Star Ballot until Thursday at 11:59 p.m. ET. The All-Star Game is Tuesday, July 17.

‘Dead’ week now through Saturday: Each summer, the Georgia High School Association suspends all athletics training (workouts, camps and clinics)  for the week including Independence Day. The official word: “The ‘Dead Week’ for the 2017-18 school year is Sunday, July 1, through Saturday, July 7, 2018. The GHSA office will be closed during the Dead Week.”


Rome to host the 2018 USA Track & Field Georgia Region 4 Junior Olympic Championships this week. Competition is set for July 5 through 8 at Barron Stadium. Nick Bridges, Rome High’s track and field coach, anticipates as many as 2,500 student athletes in town taking part in some of the championships. They’ll come from Georgia, Florida and South Carolina — and that number doesn’t include family and friends, Bridges adds.  What you need to know:
