Man severely beaten last week at Royal Inn has died. Updated murder charges pending for suspect arrested Friday.

A man severely beaten last week at the Royal Inn motel on Martha Berry Boulevard has died. According to Floyd County Coroner Gene Proctor, Joseph Richard Dye, age 49, passed away Friday at 11:48 p.m. at Floyd Medical Center.

Proctor says the cause of death is blunt force trauma to the head and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide. Dye’s body has been sent to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.

Deputies arrested 38-year-old John Robert Mostiller on Friday in connection with the beating. He is charged with aggravated battery, battery and probation violation. According to Floyd County Jail reports, murder charges have not yet been added.

Dye was transported to Floyd Medical Center Wednesday morning after being found unconscious at his home  at 2534 Shorter Ave.  Law enforcement was notified that Mr. Dye had suffered serious head injuries and was being admitted to Floyd Medical Center for treatment.  

The Rome Police Department Criminal Investigation Division initiated an investigation into the circumstances which led to the injuries suffered by Mr. Dye.  The investigation discovered the injuries to Mr. Dye were intentionally inflicted at 1201 Martha Berry Blvd., The Royal Inn.
