Rome Braves hit hard, fall 11-6 to open series at Asheville. Media release: The Asheville Tourists matched their biggest offensive inning of the season on Tuesday night. Asheville plated eight runs in the second inning against the Rome Braves and held on to win 11-6.
The Tourists sent 14 batters to the plate in the second inning alone, including 11 straight with two outs. Casey Golden hit a one-out Home Run to tie the score 1-1 and seven runs later Asheville had an 8-1 lead. Sean Bouchard delivered a three-run double in the frame. Bret Boswell and Ryan Vialde each had RBI singles. Matt McLaughlin and Taylor Snyder both worked bases loaded walks.
After Rome scored twice in the top of the fifth, Asheville plated three more in the bottom half. Bouchard and Chad Spanberger both managed RBI singles and Snyder chipped in a sacrifice fly.
Nick Kennedy earned his first win of the year with a six-inning starting pitching performance. Kennedy struck out a season-high eight batters. Erick Julio followed with four strikeouts over the next two frames and Robert Tyler struck out a pair in the ninth.
Bouchard finished 3-for-5 with a game-high four RBI. Tyler Bugner recorded three hits in his McCormick Field debut. Golden and Vilade both reached base four times in the win.

Berry College’s Kassie Howard and Brittany Tuttle have been selected to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The program recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
Howard, a senior pitcher from Alpharetta, earns her second straight Academic All-America honor, earning first team honors for the first time in program history with a 3.81 GPA. She earned her fourth consecutive All-Conference honor from the Southern Athletic Association (SAA), earning the league’s Pitcher of the Year award for the second time this season. She was also selected to her second National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America team, becoming the first Viking to earn first-team honors. Howard tossed 156.1 innings for the Vikings, leading the team to a 39-6 record and the team’s first appearance in the NCAA Super Regionals. She finished the year with a 25-3 record and a 1.16 ERA, a career-best. Howard also struck out 209 batters on the year, while walking a career-low 43. She holds every pitching record in Berry softball history, and closes her career with an 89-10 record, striking out 736 with a 1.25 career ERA. Howard was also named the Berry College Mika Robinson Female Student Athlete of the Year.
Tuttle, a senior outfielder from Snellville, earns her first Academic All-America honor after placing on the Academic All-District team for the third straight time with a 3.93 GPA. Tuttle became the first Viking in program history so pass 100 career stolen bases this year, posting a .406 average during her final season. She also earned her third straight All-Region nod from the NFCA, posting a career-best 50 runs scored with 56 hits, 24 RBIs and a .458 OBP.
Twenty-five of the 33 members of the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division III softball teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with 11 student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 GPA. The 11 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.97. The Division III Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 Division III Academic All-America® teams.
