Politics: Two years out from the primary, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office race already is sizzling.

If you thought the recent superior court judge race was something, get ready for a contest that will make it look like the minor leagues.

The contest to be the next sheriff of Floyd County is going to be one for the books. While simmering for months following Chief Deputy Tom Caldwell’s intent to serve after Sheriff Tim Burkhalter retires in 2020, the heat was turned up considerably with the anticipated announcement that Capt. Dave Roberson was joining the race.

Look for a few more to enter the race — even if we have a primary runoff and general election to complete this year as well as municipal elections in 2018.

Just how contested will this sheriff’s race be? Consider this. Roberson’s announcement statement was sent Thursday afternoon just as Caldwell was holding the first of several meet-and-greet sessions at Rome City Brewing Co.’s Tap Room at 333 Broad St.
